Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The Simply Science series is written to "explain key concepts of science in an easy-to-understand way." In this volume of the series, young readers are introduced to satellites and the Global Positioning System (GPS). The first half of the book discusses the satellites circling above the earth, how they are sent into the atmosphere and how they stay in orbit. In the second half, the author describes the Global Positioning System and its functions. At the end of the book are a brief glossary, two "Did You Know Facts" and the "Want to Know More" page, which lists other books, websites and addresses where more information on this subject can be found. The format of the book—large print, limited text, many full-page photographs—suggest the book is written for younger readers. But most younger readers do not yet have the necessary knowledge needed to comprehend this complex subject and will find this book less than easy-to-understand. 2004, Compass Point Books, Ages 7 to 8.

Gr 3-5-How Scientists Work is a clear, directly worded discussion of the scientific method. Odd non sequiturs and choppy text in Satellites distract from an otherwise workmanlike look at a fairly complex matter. Sinking also offers a scientifically sound introduction to a complicated subject. All three titles are attractively designed with usually clear and well-captioned, full-color photos and reproductions. End matter includes a glossary, a factoid, and a list for further reading with a Web crawler that is maintained by the publisher for accuracy and content. These books are adequate for libraries seeking to bolster and extend curriculum, but perhaps not first purchases for general interest.-Dona Ratterree, New York City Public Schools Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
