Children's LiteratureThe Simply Science series is written to "explain key concepts of science in an easy-to-understand way." In this volume of the series, young readers are introduced to satellites and the Global Positioning System (GPS). The first half of the book discusses the satellites circling above the earth, how they are sent into the atmosphere and how they stay in orbit. In the second half, the author describes the Global Positioning System and its functions. At the end of the book are a brief glossary, two "Did You Know Facts" and the "Want to Know More" page, which lists other books, websites and addresses where more information on this subject can be found. The format of the book—large print, limited text, many full-page photographs—suggest the book is written for younger readers. But most younger readers do not yet have the necessary knowledge needed to comprehend this complex subject and will find this book less than easy-to-understand. 2004, Compass Point Books, Ages 7 to 8.
