Overview

Once he left the United States to spend over a decade living and working in Europe, Dexter Gordon found many opportunities to perform, particularly at the Montmartre Jazzhus in Copenhagen. Part of this 1967 radio broadcast was issued, but these tracks never saw the light of day until label owner Nils Winther uncovered them in his recorded archives. Pianist Kenny Drew, like Gordon, had taken up residence in Europe and appeared on many record dates as a leader or sideman. Art Taylor was a recent arrival, adding a punch that inspired Gordon on this evening, while 20-year-old bassist Bo Stief holds his own, in spite of being intimidated by playing with three veterans and learning some songs on the fly. Like many of the tenor saxophonist's live recordings, the four songs are extended workouts with plenty of solo space. While the balance isn't perfect, no Gordon fan will complain. "Satin Doll" is one of the most overplayed pieces in the jazz repertoire, but the quartet's swinging treatment keeps it from getting stale. Gordon's trademarked Irish jig introduction to the standard "It's You or No One" sets up this energetic performance, with rollicking solos all around. The tenor saxophonist was a ballad master as well, as demonstrated in in his gorgeous setting of "Darn That Dream," though the muddy audio on this selection is a tad distracting. The set ends with a romp through Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce" that unfortunately is faded near the 18-minute mark but leaves listeners wanting more.
