Monsters fuzzy, scaly and tentacled arrive at this beastly soir e as an insect announces, "Hello, my name is Parasite./ I'll be your waiter for tonight." They dine on "Roach flamb , termite croquettes,/ Special tonight: pest-o-baguettes," and the ma tre d' breaks up a food fight where one can't tell customers from main courses. Jane Zalben (Beni's Family Cookbook) and her husband, making his debut, superimpose images of the slimy clientele on duotone photos of a classy dining room. But the digitally colored drawings, feathers, sequins and handmade paper collages make a muddled bouillabaisse against the faded backdrops, and the plot is, unfortunately, as flimsy as a mosquito souffl . What a feast for an assemblage of beasts! This witty story centers on the Beastro, a quirky eating establishment where host Monsieur Gorgon serves all manner of creepy-crawly cuisine to an equally unusual crowd of furred, feathered, and scaly patrons. A mythical menu describes the freaky fare as "All that scatters, squirms, or slithers—served on platters." When a particularly cranky beast finds fault with his meal, bedlam breaks out, and fur and feathers fly in a somewhat violent interlude. Monsieur Gorgon restores order by threatening to withhold dessert. After completing that final course, the guests enjoy dancing to the strains of Gargoyle George and the skeletal Last Remains. Faint watermark photos of a real restaurant serve as the backdrop for illustrations and doctored photos of an endless mélange of characters. The pithy wordplay is enjoyable, although some verses do not quite have the cadence to make them click comfortably. But it's a good bet that the book's inventive—and often gross—descriptions will keep kids entertained. 2004, HarperCollins, Ages 8 to 12.

PreS-Gr 2-A rhyming text describes Saturday night in a New Orleans hangout for the finest beasts where the cuisine features, "All that scatters,/Squirms, or slithers-served on platters." The Beastro's menu includes such delicacies as free-range fireflies, Jus de Skunk, and roach flambe-and if the patrons of the Beastro don't mind their manners, they just might end up on the menu, too. Less an actual story than a catalog of gross food, this book may be just right for fans of David Pelham's Sam's Sandwich (Dutton, 1991). The unique illustrations feature colorful drawings and collages of the beasts, superimposed over faded photos of an actual New Orleans eatery, but the most fascinating part of the book just may be the endpapers that feature a recipe for "Chef Charles Worm Souffle." Jane Breskin Zalben is the author and illustrator of more than fifty children’s books, including picture books, young adult novels, and cook books. She is particularly known for her sweet picture books about the young bear named Beni—one of which, Beni's Family Cookbook, was an ALA Notable Book. She has also illustrated versions of Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky and The Walrus and the Carpenter. Her latest books include Let There Be Light: Poems and Prayers for Repairing the World, and Hey, Momma Goose. A graduate of Queens College, she taught at the School of Visual Arts for many years and is a painter in the modern tradition. This is her first book with Harper. She is married to Steven Zalben who co-authored and co-created this book.

Steven Zalben is an architect in New York City. Also a graduate of Queens College, Steven was a teacher for many years in New York City Schools before becoming an architect. He now works on commercial and residential projects and specializes in the preservation and restoration of historic structures. This is Steven’s first book, and his first literary collaboration with his wife.
