Saturday Night Jamboree

( 1 )

Overview

When Mama and Daddy skip out to go dancin', this little gal doesn't mind. She's got three of the rootinest, tootinest baby-sitters ever to spin a yarn of rustlers and roundups, sizzle up some spicy grub, or sing a sad, sad country song under the spotlights. With Carlene, Chet, or Uncle Buffalo Beau in charge, Saturday night's a rip-roarin' good time for sure.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
There are personal narratives aimed at a younger audience, like Lee Wardlaw's Saturday Night Jamboree. The voice has a strong country twang and rhythm, rhyme and vivid words describe the thrilling nights of a young girl who welcomes unusual babysitters when her parents go out Western dancin'. Relatives and friends like Uncle Buffalo Beau and Jed, who is clad in snakeskin boots, rustle up grub and spin a mean tale. But the best Jamboree is "when Mama and Daddy stay home with me" and sing "toe tappin' tunes and pretend to be ky-otes that howl at the moon." 2000, Dial, . Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer: Susie Wilde
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-A young girl has three terrific sitters who take turns coming to stay with her whenever her parents go dancing. Carlene brings a dress-up trunk so she and her young charge can pretend to be country singers. Chet makes a mean chili and Uncle Buffalo Beau spins a tall, western, long-ago tale. As much as the child enjoys her sitters, she admits that "-Saturday night is the best jamboree when Mama and Daddy stay home" and they all dance together. A rollicking, rhyming text celebrates the joy of attentive, creative caregivers and the loving parents they can't replace. Though the rhyme has a couple of near misses, they will be forgiven when it is read with a proper twang. Vibrant watercolor-and-gouache illustrations depict semi-realistic cartoon figures and capture their warmth and zest for life. Thigh-slappin' fun to read aloud, with visuals bold enough to be seen in the back row.-Jody McCoy, The Bush School, Seattle, WA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
