Ralph Stanley employed a raft of guests on this project but never allowed them to obscure his concept. Most of these tunes have roots in mountain or gospel music. Although Ralph and his brother Carter are considered to be among the fathers of bluegrass, the music on these discs has more of a mountain flavor to it. I found both this set and his later Clinch Mountain Country to be worthy of being mentioned with the first Will The Circle Be Unbroken album.

Besides being full of unbelievably good bluegrass, this set is wonderful because you have something to listen to whether you want something upbeat, or something more relaxed. I have to say that the "Sunday Morning" cd will soothe the savage beast, or at least a minivan full of children. When I pick my daughter up from preschool, I have with me my 2 year old boy, and then I also transport my friend's 4 year old to his sitter. Everyday for months they are all wild as the wind for the whole trip and loud as can be. Last week I just happen to have "Sunday Morning" in the cd player, and it hit me half-way to the sitter's house that I hadn't heard a peep out of the kids since it started playing. So I tried it again the next day, and to my amazement, the kids listened quitely the entire trip. I have done it everyday since, and it is amazing! That is worth 5 stars right there! A truly wonderul cd set!

This 31-cut, two-disc project is a masterpiece reflecting both the secular and spiritual sides of Ralph Stanley's artistry. It is also a concept he mulled over in his mind for some time before executing it. The idea was to include performers from both the country and bluegrass worlds doing songs that somehow fit into the Stanley Brothers' tradition. With the inclusion of some Stanley originals as well as tunes written by Bill Monroe, Dwight Yoakam, Tom T. Hall, and Roy McMillan, this is not only a diverse compilation of material, but also one that never fails to interest the listener. Certainly the start-off number, McMillan's "Mountain Folks," which is done up just ...
