Overview

A SATURDAY SALON is a fun way to create time and space for rich conversations, and a great way to connect with friends, colleagues, neighbors and family to talk about what's really on our minds. A unique and inspiring book, SATURDAY SALON entertains, educates and motivates the reader in every chapter with humor, research, personal stories and practical applications. First, SATURDAY SALON is a guide to hosting your own Saturday Salon, providing as much or as little detail as the modern host needs, from making their first guest list to closing the door on the last satisfied guest. Second, it's a tour through the history of conversation salons, from the Ancient Greeks and 18th century France, sweeping back and forth across continents, genders, and time zones, culminating in the well-muscled 21st century salons of today. Finally, using humor, scientific data and personal stories, SATURDAY SALON shows how the flexible, democratic format can be adapted to any environment, featuring Singles, Artist, School, Business, Political and Family Salons. There is no agenda, and the unique Talking Stick format and participant-selected topics are the keys to success no matter whom you gather together for refreshing conversation. So, why wait? Meet the Author

Valerie blames her love of conversation and tendency to see the world from multiple points of view on her father's fun-loving Irish roots and her mother’s insatiable love of books.

She enjoyed living in a total of 5 countries and 7 states before the age of 25, finally settling with her two children in California. In between attending her boys' baseball games, church, and camping trips, to deepen her understanding of the different cultures she experienced in her travels, she completed a BA and MA in Cultural Anthropology from UC Irvine, and picked up a teaching certificate from Concordia University.

During those years, Valerie became aware of a growing need for a place to have meaningful conversations, free of religious, political or cultural agendas. Combining her personal and professional background, she created the first Saturday Salon, an intimate evening of deep conversation, fueled by good food and wine, utilizing a unique Talking Stick format, where everyone is welcome, and no topics are barred! Her idea was to get people talking to others different from themselves, in order to find creative solutions to the personal, local and national challenges we face.

With her book SATURDAY SALON: BRINGING COMMUNITY AND CONVERSATION BACK INTO OUR LIVES, website and blog, www.thesaturdaysalon.com, Valerie continues the conversation, providing inspiration as well as nuts and bolts tips to help her readers start their own Saturday Salons.

Valerie is the author of a poetry book, TILTING WINDMILLS, LOGAN, a mystery novel set in an arts festival. She lives with her husband in California, where she enjoys their 6 children, 2 grandcats, 2 granddogs, and is completing work on her next book.

Refreshing reading!  Loved it! You can dip into any chapter and learn something interesting.  I hosted a Saturday Salon and everyone had a great time and want to do it again.  Great recipes, too.

I had high hopes for this book. It turned out to be a confusing, convoluted attempt to sound like the author knows what she is talking about. She talks round and round on points that should be obvious to the average person. I am very disappointed that I wasted any money at all on this book.
