Editorial Reviews

Patricia L. Wong
This is the millennium edition of this work; the seventh edition was published in 1997. This updated, multiauthored paperback includes a new chapter on tropical dermatology and a revised drug formulary. The chapters are organized by broad categories such as viral, fungal, bullous, or collagen diseases, making it user friendly for the non-dermatologist. The purpose is to serve as a dermatology resource for the non-dermatologic professional. Medical students, first year dermatology residents, and primary care physicians will find this reference a good addition to their medical library. The discussions of the various entities are succinct and informative without being too pedantic or obtuse. The color photographs for the most part are excellent and helpful in allowing a medical student or general practitioner to ""match up the picture"" with the patient and arrive at a reasonable working diagnosis and treatment plan. The chapters are sprinkled with ""Sauerisms"" highlighted in light blue shaded boxes. These are clinical tips based on his experience and they are interesting to read. This is one of the few texts that includes a discussion on prescribing compounded medications and this is an enjoyable aspect of the book. I have a quibble with the educational acne handout where it is recommended that one avoid ""greasy fried foods and chocolate"" among a multitude of other foods if one wishes to clear up one's acne. Apparently, this quibble has been pointed out in the past by others, as Sauer acknowledges his opinion differs from the mainstream school of thought of treating acne in this regard. The appendix-dictionary is an unusual twist. I wish that a page number had been providedfor all the words defined. The reader will learn not only the basic principles of diagnosis in dermatology but treatment as well.
A textbook for medical students and reference for general practitioners, presenting only the material they must know to diagnose and treat patients with common skin diseases without describing all the exceptions and rarities that should be referred to a specialist. Highly illustrated with color photographs. Saur himself was still on board for the 1996 seventh edition, titled ; for the eighth, the dictionary/index has been completely revamped, all chapters have been updated, and some new authors recruited. Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Patricia Wong, MD (Stanford University Medical Center)
Description: Dr. Gordon Sauer's Manual of Skin Diseases is alive and well in this 10th edition of a collaborative effort by dermatology residents and faculty. The book will appeal to general practitioners and medical students, as the focus is on helping them interpret the correct general category of skin condition they are seeing in their patients. The chapters are organized by clinical categories such as acneiform dermatoses, pruritic dermatoses, vascular dermatoses, etc. With each discussion is a detailed list of suggested treatment options. Throughout the chapters, Dr. Sauer's clinical tips appear in shaded boxes. The index is also a dictionary, defining terms and syndromes that are confusing for nondermatologists.
Purpose: The purpose is to help physicians who are not dermatologists in diagnosing, treating, and understanding some of the common skin disorders they will encounter in their patients. Medical students would enjoy reading the salient points without being overwhelmed by more authoritative encyclopedic texts.
Audience: The audience is general practitioners, family practitioners, internists, nurse practitioners, medical students, and first year dermatology residents.
Features: This is a good basic clinical dermatology reference. Its strengths are the differential diagnoses and the treatment plans, many of which are based on the authors' personal clinical experiences. Useful tables of comparison illustrate clinical presentation of similar diseases, staging of diseases, and drugs. Although there are numerous color photographs, some are not clear enough or are too dark to appreciate the lesional characteristics. The book is also accessible online.
Assessment: This manual provides nondermatologists and students with a painless way to educate themselves in dermatology without getting encumbered by the perplexing language. Following the authors' tips, one can arrive at a reasonable possibility of a diagnosis and embark on treatment with some confidence.
