Editorial Reviews

This is the millennium edition of this work; the seventh edition was published in 1997. This updated, multiauthored paperback includes a new chapter on tropical dermatology and a revised drug formulary. The chapters are organized by broad categories such as viral, fungal, bullous, or collagen diseases, making it user friendly for the non-dermatologist. The purpose is to serve as a dermatology resource for the non-dermatologic professional. Medical students, first year dermatology residents, and primary care physicians will find this reference a good addition to their medical library. The discussions of the various entities are succinct and informative without being too pedantic or obtuse. The color photographs for the most part are excellent and helpful in allowing a medical student or general practitioner to ""match up the picture"" with the patient and arrive at a reasonable working diagnosis and treatment plan. The chapters are sprinkled with ""Sauerisms"" highlighted in light blue shaded boxes. These are clinical tips based on his experience and they are interesting to read. This is one of the few texts that includes a discussion on prescribing compounded medications and this is an enjoyable aspect of the book. I have a quibble with the educational acne handout where it is recommended that one avoid ""greasy fried foods and chocolate"" among a multitude of other foods if one wishes to clear up one's acne. Apparently, this quibble has been pointed out in the past by others, as Sauer acknowledges his opinion differs from the mainstream school of thought of treating acne in this regard. The appendix-dictionary is an unusual twist. I wish that a page number had been providedfor all the words defined. The reader will learn not only the basic principles of diagnosis in dermatology but treatment as well.

A textbook for medical students and reference for general practitioners, presenting only the material they must know to diagnose and treat patients with common skin diseases without describing all the exceptions and rarities that should be referred to a specialist. Highly illustrated with color photographs. Saur himself was still on board for the 1996 seventh edition, titled ; for the eighth, the dictionary/index has been completely revamped, all chapters have been updated, and some new authors recruited. Description: This dermatology book for general practitioners includes chapters devoted to the structure and function of the skin, infections, bullous disorders, pediatric dermatology, skin tumors, etc. New chapters in this expanded edition cover bioterrorism, cosmetic dermatology, lasers, and sports related skin problems. With this ninth edition, John Hall has assumed Dr. Sauer's academic role in the publication.
Purpose: The purpose is to aid general practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders.
Audience: General practitioners and medical students are the audience.
Features: The dictionary-index combines definition of dermatological terms and syndromes with pages where they are discussed in the book. Good discussions cover therapy with comments about the treatment that an inexperienced person would appreciate knowing. For example, it is noted that a particular cream is effective but can stain clothing yellow, or that a particular cream is effective but unpleasant smelling. The exact way in which one would prescribe the medications is spelled out in detail. The differential diagnosis gives clinical pointers in differentiating the diseases.
Assessment: This book joins other good books for physicians trying to learn more about dermatology. Compounded medications are shared by the authors. Practical advice to give patients is often provided in handout forms.
