From The Critics
Reviewer:Gerald J. Pijanowski, DVM, MS, PhD(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description:This dictionary covers the veterinary technical and scientific terms anyone associated with the veterinary profession will encounter in their work. An extensive appendix includes tables related to laboratory services, anatomy, clinical facts and veterinary professional organizations of the world. The last edition was published in 1999.
Purpose:This book is the most extensive dictionary of words and phrases in the veterinary technical and scientific vocabulary.
Audience:The audience includes anyone directly or indirectly associated with the veterinary profession. The authors have specifically targeted as broad an audience as possible, even administrative and technical assistants. The author and consultant lists contain an impressive group of international experts.
Features:This is the most extensive dictionary of veterinary related terms in the English language. The "Notes on the Use of This Dictionary" are very helpful in understanding the format. Excellent quality illustrations assist in understanding the definition, e.g., a picture of Jacob's sheep. The appendix contains an extensive collection of tables related to laboratory services (including many conversion tables), anatomy (of the major domestic species), clinically related facts, and an extensive listing of veterinary related organizations of the world. The only shortcoming is the sheer size of the volume, but this is unavoidable given the objective of the authors.
Assessment:This book should be on the shelf of every veterinarian. It is the most current and extensive veterinary dictionary in publication. The inclusion of illustrations, many in color, increases the usefulness of this third edition. In today's world of technical publications, it is fairly priced.
