Overview

SAUNDERS REVIEW OF FAMILY PRACTICE, 3RD EDITION, serves as an excellent study companion to Rakel's popular TEXTBOOK OF FAMILY PRACTICE, 6TH EDITION. It is written by family physicians who have carefully reviewed each chapter in the textbook and formulated questions pertaining to the most important learning points in each chapter. In each case, the questions are then edited to be sure they are accurate and conform to good test-taking practices. Each of the approximately 1,500 questions is followed by the correct answer and a rationale defending that answer. Page numbers for corresponding information in the textbook are also provided.

• A team of active family physicians have carefully written 1500 review questions to cover the most important points in every chapter in the textbook.

• Each question is followed by the correct answer as well as a rationale explaining why that answer is correct.

• Page references point the way to the corresponding passages in TEXTBOOK OF FAMILY PRACTICE, 6th Edition .

• Additional bibliographical citations direct you to other key works in the literature.

• The result is a quick, highly effective source for board review or an overview of family medicine

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Richard A. Guthmann, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: The second edition of this review offers 1,500 new multiple choice and true/false questions covering the spectrum of family practice. Brief explanations and references to Rakel's Textbook of Family Practice are provided.
Purpose: This book provides an opportunity for family physicians of all levels of training to augment their knowledge while assessing their current mastery of the material. This worthwhile objective can contribute to the ongoing education of all family practitioners. This study guide will help any student with the awesome task of mastering the current state of medical knowledge.
Audience: This book targets medical students, residents, and practicing physicians interested in family practice. The authors' credibility stems from their affiliation with family practice residency programs and their reliance on Rakel's Textbook of Family Practice as their source of information.
Features: This study guide uses only one or two illustrations and a few ECGs. The sparse use of illustrations may reduce the cost of the book, but the book poorly resembles board-type examinations. The book almost exclusively references the fifth edition of the Textbook of Family Practice, although the title of the book does not indicate this intimate relationship to that text. The table of contents effectively outlines the chapters in the main text. No index is provided, nor is it needed. The short chapters make this book easy to pick up and read.
Assessment: This companion study guide provides an excellent opportunity to augment and assess the knowledge base of anyone interested in family practice. The book's utility increases when used with the main text, as every question is referenced to that book. This second edition provides new study guide questions about updates in family practice, but the main advantage of the new edition is new questions for those who already reviewed the first edition.

From The Critics
This companion to Rakel's Textbook of Family Practice can also be used as a stand alone study guide. Intended for family physicians preparing for recertification, the 67 chapters provide 1,500 multiple choice and true/false questions followed by an explanation of the correct answer. The third edition adds chapters on mind-body medicine, evidence-based medicine, and clinical guidelines. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
