Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dianne Ochiltree
From the popular early chapter book series, "Jack Russell: Dog Detective," comes another howlingly funny book. This soft cover title starts with the mysterious disappearance of a box of frozen links meant for the Dog and Sausage Day festival at the local school. Who could the pup-petrator be? Jack in-terrier-gates the usual suspects: Foxie the fox terrier, Lord Red the Irish setter, Polly the dachshund, and other neighborhood hounds that might have a motive to snatch those sausages. His investigation is carried out without detection by the humans in the story—Auntie Tidge, Caterina Smith, and even his owner, Sarge—because they think he is just "being a dog." In the end the canine criminal is detected and ordered to ‘stop in the name of the paw," but not before there are a lot of entertaining, clever plot twists. Kids will love the quick pace as well as the interspersed spot drawings (diagrams of the scents Jack's nose detects in pursuit), "Jack's Facts" (each chapter sums up the dog detective's findings and logical conclusions), and "Jack's Glossary" (a periodic explanation of all the ‘punny' dog-inspired terms used throughout the text). This one makes learning to read a chapter book a whole lot of fun! Reviewer: Dianne Ochiltree
