Overview

• Gives the reader a firsthand look at war from inside a B-17 bomber in World War II • Focuses on the 92nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force and includes missions to the Schweinfurt ball-bearing plant and Berlin • One of the first accounts of being shot down over Sweden The Savage Sky is as close as you can get to experiencing aerial combat while still staying firmly planted on the ground. The writing is vivid and intimate, describing the bitter cold at high altitudes, gut-wrenching fear, lethal shrapnel from flak, and German fighters darting through the bomber formation like feeding sharks.

I was originally interested in this book because it is the autobiographical story of a B-17 radio operator in the European Theater of World War II and I am a collector of military radios from that era. After I bought my first copy and started to read it I realized that George Webster has written his story in amazing detail, not just of his radio operations but of life in a WW II bomber squadron with its almost incredible hardships, terrors, occasional quiet moments and the love that probably saved his life - or at least his sanity. I recently ordered another copy for some friends of mine; both were Air Force flight crew members in the recent past and one of them is still on active duty. They both thought the book was riveting and hard to put down.

Death isn't so bad. The cause is. But actually dieing to save someone is worth it. I knew that death was only second away. You might be wondering why im so close to death. It all started with a locket. Lets go back a bit... When i was eight my mother passed away in a car accident. She was all I had left after my father left us to fight the war. I had to continue my life with my grandmother. I have been staying with her for 5 years. But she got ill. She died when i was 11. I knew the orphanage would take me away but i could not let that happen. I am now 14. I spent 3 years living in the wild with two others my age. We live our lives by helping people. Since my mother died i knew nothing would ever be normal. But at the same time i still havent found my reason in this god given world. And i will not stand to die until i find that purpose... January 1, 2013. "I hope you have a plan Marzia, because i dont think Felix likes being up this early." Said Tiff, my freind since my grandmother died. "Listen. Do you guys hear that?" I asked them both. We are now in Sweden and have only been out of our town for 3 days. "You mean the silence that nobody feels comfortable in. Ya i hear it." Said Felix sarcasticly. "No i mean the howl of pain." I said looking at Felix. "Felix!!! Wake up!!!" I snapped my fingers and he burst wide awake. It was only 2:00 in the morning. But a howl from a wolf still sounded strong, but in pain. I looked up at the sky to see the north star. We headed north to try and find the wolf. We couldn't get any closer than we wanted to, becasue the whole pack of wolves came at us with amazing speed... (hey guys. Sky here. Please rate this story well. Im sorry its short. I primise they will be londer but today it was not. Hope you enjoyed it.)
