Overview

First of its Kind...ever, in the U.S.A. and a Must Read for Anyone Doing Savanna Restoration

Landowners, foresters, and land stewards now have a tool to make sure savanna restorations are successful, cost effective, and sustainable. A new book, "Savanna Soils of Minnesota" will help them correctly identify soils, the critical element in managing savanna ecosystems.

The handbook and field guide compiles U.S.D.A. Natural Resources Conservation Service soil information on oak savannas and mixed hardwoods-prairie grasses in more than 80 Minnesota Counties. Steve Nelson, a forester working-with private woodland owners since 1985, has compiled this information to help landowners find their oak savanna and mixed hardwood - prairie grass lands.

The handbook / fieldguide
• Describes what savannas are, where they grow, and how much acreage exists.
• Makes it easy to find remnant, or relic, savannas in Minnesota.
• Highlights Minnesota's savanna regions, where people can manage for native grasses, trees or both.
• Gives county-level details.
• Shows county acreages and private forestland acres.

The field guide will help landowners correctly identify their savanna ecosystems and make the best targeted investments. Proper ecosystem identification assures sustainable land management and helps prevent the spread of disease. Landowners can go forward on their conservation and restoration projects, getting healthier savannas and forests, improved wildlife and water protection and income from biomass harvests. This guide will help public decision makers determine if restoration, protection or enhancement projects are feasible prior to funding them.
