Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Twelve-year-old Charley Olson and his friend Ben Lawrence plan on joining the Union Army. Charley's Uncle Nils tells him he's too young to fight in the Civil War and he won't permit him to sign up. But Charley is determined and feels that President Lincoln is personally calling him to help save the Union. Charley and Ben agree to meet in Peterson's hayrack, but Ben doesn't show up and Charley finds himself going on alone. So begins Reisberg's story that takes the reader along with Charley Olson, a drummer boy from Minnesota who finds himself on the battlefield of Bull Run in Virginia. Author Reisberg's descriptions of Charley's fears, the men he meets, and the sights of the Civil War make the reader feel as though he is with Charley on the battle field. Charley's views on the war change quickly when he sees friends die or get wounded. And when he meets up with another young boy from the other side, he realizes he is just like him, afraid and trying to do the right thing for his country. Charley realizes how lucky he is to have an Uncle and a home waiting for him. It is going to be a long war, and maybe he is too young to be fighting it. This story is based on the author's own family experiences of a great-grandfather who marched with a Minnesota Regiment. Some black and white photographs are included. 2001, White Mane Kids, $5.95.
