Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
As the story opens, it is four days before April 22nd, also known as Earth Day. Freddy and the rest of his first grade class are challenged by their teacher, Mrs. Wushy, to do ten earth-friendly activities before Friday. The activities include taking a shower instead of a bath to save water; picking up litter; turning off lights, computers and televisions to save power; and recycling. The students who successfully complete the challenge will become members of the Green Team but, more importantly, "If everyone works hard to take care of the planet, then everyone will be a winner." Number twenty-five in the "Get Ready for Freddy!" series, this story is educational as well as entertaining. Freddy's desire to be on the Green Team is palpable and believable, and it's nice to see his parents encouraging, and following, his actions. The illustrations are creative and fun—though Mrs. Wushy does bear a striking resemblance to Freddy's mom! Freddy is a likable character, but the first grade voice does not always ring true (classmates know all about trees making oxygen and composting; a first grade girl stands up to the big first grade bully). The book also features "Freddy's Fun Pages," which include shark facts (relevance?) and how to make a compost bin. Overall, an effective and enjoyable introduction to Earth Day, and a nice way to get parents and children joining forces to take care of our planet. Reviewer: Naomi Milliner
