Saving Animals After Earthquakes

Saving Animals After Earthquakes

by Joyce Markovics

When disaster strikes, people aren't the only ones in danger. In January 2010, a huge earthquake hit southern Haiti. Two small dogs named Bella and Deiter were inside their owner's apartment. Amazingly, this was not their first time in a natural disaster. About five years earlier, they had been rescued from separate homes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Overview

When disaster strikes, people aren't the only ones in danger. In January 2010, a huge earthquake hit southern Haiti. Two small dogs named Bella and Deiter were inside their owner's apartment. Amazingly, this was not their first time in a natural disaster. About five years earlier, they had been rescued from separate homes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Would they be lucky enough to survive once again?

Look inside to meet the everyday heroes who found ways to save animals from the earthquake in Haiti, as well as other deadly quakes in other parts of the world. These brave men and women have managed to rescue not only pets such as dogs and cats, but also farm animals such as goats and sheep, and even endangered wild animals such as giant pandas-sometimes risking their own lives as they rushed in to help.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Denise Daley
When natural disasters such as earthquakes happen, animals can be overlooked as the initial focus is on rescuing people. Fortunately, groups have been formed to help the many animals that have been lost or abandoned due to earthquakes. When a huge quake struck Haiti in 2008, for example, it is estimated that there were as many as 150,000 stray dogs. Groups such as Best Friends Animal Society and the Animal Relief Coalition were just a few of those that rescued animals and gave them medical treatment. This informative and interesting book touches upon several devastating earthquakes that recently occurred as well as the efforts of the various animal rescue organizations. In addition to saving pets, there are groups dedicated to helping wild animals that are displaced due to earthquakes. There are numerous color photographs throughout the book that enable the reader to witness the compassionate efforts of the rescue workers. The chapters are only two pages long and each page has only one paragraph. The book ends with a glossary, index, and a list of sources for additional information. It is part of the "Rescuing Animals from Disasters" series. Reviewer: Denise Daley
