Overview

When disaster strikes, people aren't the only ones in danger. Winter snowstorms and spring rainstorms hit eastern Iowa, causing rivers to overflow their banks in 2008. The swirling waters washed away roads and buildings-and also covered farms where thousands of pigs and other animals lived. Would anyone come to their rescue?

Look inside to meet the everyday heroes who have found ways to save animals from major floods in the United States and other parts of the world. These brave men and women have managed to rescue not only pigs and horses, but also pets such as dogs and cats and wild animals such as kangaroos and deer-sometimes even risking their own lives as they rushed in to help.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
Flooding is an international problem. This nonfiction book, a title in the "Rescuing Animals from Disasters" series, shows how floods affect the animal populations of the world. The first half of the book describes the harrowing experiences of pigs on an Iowa farm after a flood. Heavily illustrated with appealing photographs and captions, the brief text includes first person witness accounts. The combination gives readers a solid sense of being there. Information is also given on the rescue and care of wildlife and pets in the area. The second half of the book centers on the rescue of livestock and wildlife endangered by floods around the world. Back matter includes information about the animal rescue missions after floods in Brazil and Mexico and information describing how floods affect different animals in different ways. The book contains an index, a bibliography, a thorough glossary, and suggestions for further information. Unfortunately, the single website link provided leads only to the publisher's site. The book will appeal to animal lovers both as research material and as recreational reading. Reviewer: Lisa Colozza Cocca
