Overview

When disaster strikes, people aren't the only ones in danger. In August 2005, Tropical Storm Katrina formed over the Atlantic Ocean. Soon the storm became a huge hurricane headed for the Gulf Coast. Residents had to evacuate quickly. In most cases, they had no choice but to leave behind their pets. Would anyone come to the animals' rescue?

Look inside to meet the everyday heroes who found ways to save animals from Hurricane Katrina and the floods that followed. These brave men and women managed to rescue not only dogs and cats, but also farm and zoo animals such as horses, cows, alligators, and dolphins-sometimes even risking their own lives as they rushed in to help.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
This nonfiction book, a title in the "Rescuing Animals from Disasters" series, focuses on the effects of Hurricane Katrina on the animals in the area. Through text and full-color photographs, readers experience the discovery and rescue of thousands of stranded pets. The book also details the rescue of farm animals and aquarium residents. A two page spread highlights the work of Don Kinney, a New Orleans police officer. The storm knocked out power to the aquarium. Kinney fed the birds and animals living there and saved their lives. Heavily illustrated with appealing photographs and captions, the brief text offers a clear picture of the biggest animal rescue in history. Back matter includes information about the animal rescue missions after two other hurricanes and more information describing how hurricanes affect animal populations. The book contains an index, a bibliography, a glossary, and suggestions for further information. Unfortunately, the website link provided leads only to the publisher's site advertising other books in the series. The book will appeal to a wide range of readers both as research material and as recreational reading. Reviewer: Lisa Colozza Cocca
