Children's Literature - Meredith KigerOne of five in the "Money Smart" series, this edition discusses the concept of saving and is aimed at upper elementary students. The six chapters include: If You Would Abe Wealthy..., You Need to Do the Math, Ways to Save, Kids and Saving, Saving: How Much and What For?, and ...Thin of Saving As Well As Getting. Using an interesting layout, bold type, boxed items of interest and color photos, the book provides an interesting introduction to saving using an historical as well as contemporary approach. The informal sometimes humorous approach to the serious subject matter should interest students as well as provide them with useful information. Parents may benefit from the book's discussions as well as we all seem to need reminding about using money wisely. There is some repetition across the series which may have been intentional since the subject matter tends to require it. A glossary of new terms, a bibliography, sources for further information and notes about the authors are included at the end of the book. It would have been a plus had newly introduced vocabulary been highlighted within the text, as well. Overall, it's a balanced and appropriate introduction on a subject that could not be more timely.
