Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The gorilla on the cover should grab any reader's attention. It has such a soulful expression. The text opens with a question "Could you kill the last member of an animal or plant species?" Most of us would respond in the negative, but not only has it happened, it is happening almost daily. It happened in 1914 when the last passenger pigeon died. A boxed inset tells us that 16,000 species are in danger, with some 2,500 in extreme danger. If people do not take action there may be no more elephants. Conservationists are trying to help. Ecotourism is one approach to help poorer people by not using slash and burn technology to decimate the rainforests, but to protect them and still generate a living. There is a discussion of extinction as it related to the dinosaurs and theories about their extinction. Today we have problems due to pollution and monoculture. One variety of a plant is struck by a disease and since it is the only type being planted the entire crop is lost. We need to maintain varieties—there is great danger in reducing biodiversity. Some plants and animals can be saved and bred and released to once again populate areas where they are either protected or allowed to run wild. Colorful photographs appear on each page and text and images are often superimposed. Good readers should have no problem, but those who are not proficient may find the text and layout too difficult to handle. Bolded words are defined in the glossary, which is followed by a page of references to books and websites to learn more. There is an index. Part of the "Science Solves It" series.
