Overview

The United States—the world’s great bastion of freedom—is sliding toward socialism. Recent high-profile bailouts show the walls between government and the private sector are getting thinner each day. Federal control now extends in various ways to education, healthcare, financial markets, real estate, businesses, and religion. And as out-of-control government spending and debt increase accordingly, America is drained of the economic and political strength its people fought and worked so hard to achieve. But it isn’t too late to save the land of the free.

Saving Freedom is Senator Jim DeMint’s firsthand account of the unsettling socialist shift—behind-the-scenes actions in Congress that are changing the character of our nation. He illuminates key principles of freedom and how they are being compromised by big government. More important, DeMint lays out a complete action plan to reclaim America’s freedom based on legislation that would reduce debt, fix Social Security, and provide a tax credit for every family to buy health insurance. The plan also emphasizes reversing America’s cultural decline by restoring a strong spirit of God and country.

Meet the Author

Jim DeMint was elected senator of South Carolina in 2004 and then chairman of the Senate Steering Committee in 2006. For standing up against wasteful spending in Congress and saving Americans about $17 billion, Wall Street Journal editor Steve Moore called DeMint the “taxpayers’ greatest ally.” DeMint was also recently ranked as the Senate’s most conservative member by National Journal and as the No. 1 senator voting for responsible tax and spending policies by the National Taxpayers Union. The senator and his wife, Debbie, have four grown children, are doting new grandparents, and live in Greenville, South Carolina.

us senator jim demint has a deep faith in this country and is very concerned with the recent rise of taxes and the loss of jobs and the attacks on freedom of religion so he has writtion this exellent bestseller "saving freedom" that gave me an exllellent overview of the history of our freedoms and what they truly stand for and it gave me a greater apprieation of the political process and showed me how I can make a difference with my elected officials and with some of the bills such as health care and higher taxes. this book really gave me a greater intrest in what our founding fathers stood for. great gift idea for a friend or family member

Jim Demint, a US Senator, presents a very compelling argument about the differences between a free nation and a nation ruled by socialism. The author has demonstrated well how socialism is slowly threatening the democracy that the United States was found upon.

I recommend this book mainly because Sen. Jim DeMint is telling us that we, as individuals, have a decision to make whether the country wants to choose freedom or socialism. He points out that America is sliding into socialism and, through a plan, can bring back freedom into our lives. Let's hope more people read this book!

Senator Jim DeMint's book, preposterously-titled "Saving Freedom," is riddled with errors of basic, documented fact. No capable fact-checker reviewed DeMint's text before it was published. All of the errors are egregious, but some are jerkier than others. DeMint promotes a simplistic and false understanding of human history in North America. After stating that "Before the American Revolution, freedom was second nature to Americans" and that freedom was "bred into our DNA long before the Declaration of Independence," DeMint defines white colonial-era Americans as "People of good character and strong faith." In South Carolina, however, these freedom-loving white people of alleged "good character" enslaved Native Americans and then sold them abroad in order to fund the purchase of black slaves, who before the American Revolution became a majority of the population of the colony. The Yamasee War of 1715-1717 was fought against the colonists by Native Americans outraged over being violently usurped from their own land and enslaved. Yet DeMint would have you believe that the only thing on the white colonists' minds was "freedom" in some pure and absolute sense as inspired in them by the Christian God and Jesus, no less. While it is true that the colonists used religion to justify the enslavement of Native Americans as well as of peoples imported through barbaric violent coercion, their crimes against those peoples' human rights cannot reasonably be said to demonstrate that the colonists had "good character." In a shocking though laughable bit of fatuous, theo-cultural chauvinism, DeMint claims that the Chinese developed no science because they were not Christian. He cites one of his fellow bigot's similar statements as support for this ludicrous argument. Meanwhile, the Chinese had invented gunpowder, without which DeMint's forefathers would not have been able so efficaciously to kill Native Americans and steal their land. Equally at odds with the documented history of science is DeMint's assertion that Islam precludes scientific discoveries. As happens, to cite one among thousands of examples, Muslim scientists experimenting with pyrolysis in Baghdad in the year 764A.D. invented tar and then paved their city streets with it. At one point in his onslaught of narrow-minded, historically-uninformed, smugly self-satisfied stupidity, DeMint writes of his "searching the Scriptures and finding out what God really said." Every time a human attributes words to "God," the attribution is hearsay. A person with genuine respect for the legal system of the United States would not convict somebody on hearsay. Yet, according to DeMint, "God" says that homosexuality is "wrong," and that is that. Though DeMint spills a lot of ink fawning over the memory of Martin Luther, he neglects to mention that the largest Lutheran group in America today ordains out, married homosexual ministers. In the world according to Jim DeMint, Jim DeMint alone knows what God said and he is sure that God "really" said it. If you disagree in any way, or want direct evidence of God having said a thing, well, according to Dumb Daddy DeMint, you are a socialist and therefore one of the greatest enemies of the United States. It is simply flabbergasting that DeMint in this book states that the "greatest enemy" of the United States is not a terrorist group but rather "public policies deployed by elected officials who have lost sight of why America is great." If so funny that the GOP shouts religion and God at every turn but fail to talk candidly about what God said about socialism and capitalism. If you are going to use religion or God as a source at least know what He said.

Do you believe that the government should be neutral when it comes to religion and let the free marketplace of ideas debate the question of a deity? Well, then according to DeMint you are a socialist. You might say, what!?! According to DeMint there is no difference between the two, he uses secular socialist as almost one word throughout much of the book. So, if you are a secularist who believes fully in capitalism or a Christian socialist then you must not really exist then. DeMint talks about freedom but he depores a right to privacy. He must never have read the 9th Amendment which guarantees rights not already listed in the Bill of Rights. If privacy isn't one of them, I don't know which ones are. Maybe according to DeMint it is a right to exploit labor at Wal Mart supplier factories. DeMint supports the ability of the government to outlaw politically incorrect sex, or in other words sex between two consenting men. It's amazing the same people who want the government to lock up two men having sex seem (not saying specifically DeMint-don't know what websites he watches at night) to be ok with watching two women having sex on video. The hypocrisy that dare not speaks its' name? DeMint also believes that if the government is not saying his religion is true, then it is oppressing his religious beliefs. Common religious right opinion though. He believes that secularists (not knowing that many secularists also believe in a deity) want to oppress religious belief. No, they want the government to be neutral on religion. Frankly, I don't think he actually knows what the word secularist means. DeMint believes that if a prayer doesn't mention Jesus or the Christian religion, specifically, then it is perfectly fine and ok to use governmental money and resources to tell children through a governmental committee that a deity exists. After all, how dare people be upset that the government is indoctrating your child in Jim DeMint's religious beliefs. Frankly, too many on the religious right (not saying all Christians) remind of of spoiled children. They want the government to tell everyone their religion is true, to worship their deity, to believe in their deity, to pray to their deity and if the government doesn't do that they wail that it is unfair. I say, grow up. If your religion is correct then it doesn't need the government of one nation on a tiny planet in an obscure galaxy in a giant universe.

capitalism and materialism have become more important than morality.
