Overview

Praise for Saving Gracie

"Saving Gracie is heart-rending but also wonderfully stirring and empowering. The operators of puppy mills are arrogant, greedy, and cruel, but the people committed to putting them out of business make you want to cheer—and they restore your faith in humanity. Carol Bradley does a great service to dogs by telling this story."
Dean Koontz, New York Times bestselling author

"Carol Bradley seizes a national moment in Saving Gracie. With deft investigative skill and a loving heart, she tells the story of Gracie, and her sojourn from a puppy mill. If we are judged as human beings by the way we treat our animals, this is an eye-opening account, direct and informative, one you will not be able to put down."
Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author of Very Valentine and Big Stone Gap

"Saving Gracie is one of those rare books that will at once disturb, inspire, and move you to action. Read this outstanding book about the enduring strength of the human-animal bond and share it widely. It is that important."
Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals, Wild Justice, and The Animal Manifesto

"In this book about the best and the worst of human behavior, we see that the best in both humans and canines prevails. Bradley's cast of angels will fill your heart with joy and gratitude that such souls exist. This book is essential reading for anyone who loves dogs and thinks justice matters."
Susan Richards, author of the New York Times bestseller Chosen by a Horse

"Saving Gracie is a story told with verve, with compassion, with style, and with marvelous intelligence. Any dog lover will be happy to add this to the growing list of wonderful books about dogs."
Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, bestselling author of Dogs Never Lie About Love and The Face on Your Plate

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Journalist Bradley exposes the hidden world of puppy mills, where dogs are caged like chickens and forced to repeatedly breed until they die. Unlike most factory farm animals that endure painful confinement and are slaughtered within six months of birth, mill breeding dogs are sentenced to many years of existence in deplorable conditions; many don't learn to walk because their cages don't give them enough room to stand. Bradley details the raid of one such mill, Mike-Mar Kennel in Oxford, Pa., which led to the seizure of more than 300 dogs, mostly adults that had languished for years with broken limbs and untreated diseases. Dog 132, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel later named Gracie, was rescued during the raid. Nearly blind, with decayed teeth and a strong aversion to human contact, Gracie flourished under the love and patience of her adoptive owner, Linda Jackson. Bradley's powerful narrative will tug at heartstrings, raise public awareness, and, hopefully, help put an end to puppy mills. (Feb.)
Library Journal
To reveal the horrors of the puppy mill industry, award-winning journalist Bradley chronicles the rescue of a small Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Gracie. Many heroes are profiled here, from the people who investigated and shut down a Pennsylvania kennel to those who rescued, treated, and eventually adopted the canine survivors. Last but not least are the dogs, which despite their inhumane treatment were still able to form strong attachments to their new owners. VERDICT Bradley's compelling account propels readers on a roller-coaster ride of emotion as they follow Gracie's journey from a squalid puppy mill to a loving home. But this is also an excellent exposé of a shady industry—it describes legislative attempts to control the large-scale breeding of dogs and evaluates the effectiveness of those efforts.—Edell Marie Schaefer, Brookfield P.L., WI

A Grim Look Into The Hidden World Of Puppy Mills

"Saving Gracie" is the true story of a little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's rescue from a filthy, overcrowded puppy mill in Pennsylvania. It is also the story of the public's increasing awareness of the horrors of the puppy producing industry--at least 2.5 million puppies are born in these facilities every year. While most of the puppies go to pet stores and end up in homes, the breeding adults live out their lives in tiny cages, never knowing a kind human touch and never feeling grass under their feet. Once they become to old to breed, many of these dogs are shot by their owners.
This book documents the inspection and raid of MikeMar Kennels in Pennsylvania, and the subsequent trial, as well as the rehabilitaion and rehoming of hundreds of dogs. At times, the trial coverage was a bit tedious, and the history of the details of all the various laws was dry, but overall, the story was compelling. There were certainly moments of hope, as the stories of the rescued dogs, particularly Gracie, were told. There were a lot more moments of frustration, as the lawmakers, breeders and animal welfare advocates argued (and continue to argue) to change laws, while thousands of dogs suffer. Progress has been made--many kennels have been shut down, several unscrupulous breeders have been ordered to pay large fines, some pet stores which previously sold puppies have decided to start allowing shelters to showcase adoptable dogs in their stores instead. These changes are positive, but for anyone who has ever loved a dog, they are not nearly enough...there is so much more work to do.

    Very political

When I bought this book, I was looking for a story on the happy transition of a puppy mill dog to life in a family. Instead, this is a very political book on the efforts being taken by HSUS and law agencies to shut down puppy mills -- important work but not what I was looking for.

If you love dogs this is a must read

When I picked this up I expected it to be about the trials of one dog, but it was so much more than that. It truly opened my eyes to the plight of puppy mill dogs and the horrible conditions under which some animals live. Hard to believe that in our supposedly enlightened society we allow defenseless animals to be treated with such cruelty. From cover to cover I just couldn't stop reading, or stop hugging my own beautiful Cavalier King Charles.

A Highly Recommended Read for Pet Lovers

Saving Gracie was a tough book to read, but, I'm glad I did. I guess my head had been in the sand regarding puppy mills. Anyone who is as unknowing as I was about the existence of these places will be affected by reading this book. Having owned cats and dogs most of my life, I am now much more attentive to how local pet stores acquire their pets for sale and and even more supportive of our local animal shelter. When I read the "puppies for sale" ads in our newspaper, I know to question where these animals come from. This book leaves the reader with much better knowledge when the time comes to choose a new pet.

    Dear very political, please read.

Did you read the overview? It was talking about pupys lives in puy mills. PS: puppys transition from mill to family is never happy because the pupy is always sick or half dead, you heartless creep. PPS: take it from a peta member about the dogs.
