Overview

From One of America's Leading Pastors, a Bold Call to Restore Christianity's True Mission: Following Jesus

The marriage of bad theology and hypocritical behavior by the church has eroded our spiritual lives. Taking the best of biblical scholarship, Meyers recasts core Christian concepts in an effort to save Christianity from its obsession with personal salvation. Not a plea to try something brand new, but rather the recovery of something very old, Saving Jesus from the Church shows us what it means to follow Jesus's teachings today.

Editorial Reviews

Oklahoma City Oklahoman
“A perceptive book . . . Not many authors can present such progressive ideas and still come across as reasonable and loving. Meyers masters such a task.”
Library Journal

In a progressive rather than negatively critical mode, in strong contrast to much of Far Right Protestantism, pastor/NPR commentator Meyers (philosophy, Oklahoma City Univ.) suggests with typical elegance that a recovery of true Christianity emphasizes compassion over condemnation, blessing over sin, and equity over individual prosperity. Highly recommended.

—Graham Christian

    A "Must-Read" for Thoughtful Christians

Never have I read a more inspirational book! Although it is sure to be controversial, it will at least provoke religion-dulled brains, and perhaps, be life changing for some. I intend to reread it, and look for other books by Rev. Meyers. My only question would be: why hasn't the Church of Christ thrown him out on his ear? I'm glad they haven't, because I think he is absolutely on-the-money with regard to early Christian history and how "actions" changed into "beliefs" over time. A really great book!

Best book I have read about Jesus for the 21st Century

For many people who have given up on the church and Christianity, this is an encouraging book that strips away the mythology surrounding Jesus and gets at the heart of his teachings. Well written, easy to read, and at times, humorous.

    Excellent Discussion Book

Rev. Myers presents a view of Christian experience matching my personal experience. He had guts and honesty to realize that experience in a church setting. While not everyone has his take on Christianity, he presents a coherent, believable, and useful overview of what being Christian is. This would be a terrific discussion book for people who want to change tack in their spiritual journeys and form communities of faith that find honest and helpful. Use it to introduce others to writers like Marilynne Robinson, Bill McKibben, and Joan Chittister.

    Saving Jesus from the Church

A great read! I found the author had described ideas that I was so in tune with - ex. the idea that there should be no association with blood or violence as a redemptive force in our worship. I agree with the author's views that we have focused too much on the crucifixion of Jesus and not enough on the message of his life.

    Profound Book

I attended Mayflower Church before my marriage and would still be there if my husband hadn't existed. Robin Myers' message was so compelling and still influences my life. Following Jesus is the way to better citizens and a better world. His book is a must read. Carole Sidwell Thrower

Hope for Those Who Have Lost Faith

Robin, along with many other Christians, realizes the face of Christ that is now shown to the American public, does not resemble the Biblical face of Christ.

Christianity in America has become fused with the culture and represents a populist religion under the guise of Christianity.

Robin calls us back to the Biblical and historical roots of Christianity in order to re-capture it essence and re-engage in its faith practices.

His critique shows us the path of Jesus and invites us to quit worshipping the Christ and to start following Jesus.

    Great book club book.

    Amazing

Dr. Meyer once again shows that he is thinking. And that is one of his major points in this book about the "Christian Faith," that we have stopped thinking, stopped asking questions, and simply swallow the dogma. Perhaps everyone who professes to be Christian should read this book and keep an open mind and an open heart. Many of his "radical" ideas actually strike a positive chord instantly...like there is much truth laying beneath the thought. If we could be honest, as a faith, without the divisions of denominations, we would put the focus on following Jesus, as he suggests. READ IT!!! And then get some copies for the people you love.

    I Also Recommend:

    not what the Bible teaches

if Jesus is not the savior then He is not worth following. If He is not the savior, then did He shed His blood for nothing ? This is an attempt of a person to make his own version of christianity. If you follow this book you will roast in hell. Go buy a good Bible read it and forget this book. Jesus came for one reason, He had to shed His blood for the forgiveness of sin, it is in the Bible, read it.
