Charlie Long never could stand bullies, and sticking up for their victims has cost him more than once. A few years ago, in college? It cost him a place on the football team. And then just this morning? It cost him his job. But now, snatching this scrawny, scared little kid from those two goons in the alley behind the Billy Goat Tavern? This time he’s really stepped off into the deep end...and the pool stretches from Russia to Rio, from the mansions of Lake Forest to the huts of the Amazon Basin. What will it cost...

What will it cost Charlie Long to try to save Paulo?
“Taking a break from his two crime series, David J. Walker sticks to the genre in the very entertaining stand-alone SAVING PAULO… Walker’s writing will keep the reader glued, even if the last act seems a bit of a stretch with some of the actions taken. But the characters are so well-drawn, you won’t mind.”
Connie Fletcher
“This is Edgar nominee Walker’s first stand-alone thriller. Readers should be hooked from the first scene [and] what follows is a plunge into a protracted chase scene…through a wonderfully sustained suspense story.”
DAVID J. WALKER is the author of ten published mystery/suspense novels, including the acclaimed 2008 stand-alone suspense novel, Saving Paulo. His short story, “A Weekend in the Country,” was published in the popular 2006 anthology, Chicago Blues.
One of Walker’s Wild Onion, Ltd. books was short-listed for the Society of Midland Authors best novel award, and he has been an Edgar® nominee. He has served on the Board of Directors of Mystery Writers of America. He is also a member of Private Eye Writers of America, and has been a judge for both the Edgar and Shamus awards.
Walker is a life-long Chicagoan. He has been a parish priest in Chicago, an investigator with the Chicago Police Department, and an attorney. At present, he is a full-time writer and lives with his wife just north of the city.
