Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a Sea Otter Research and Conservation program (SORAC) which rehabilitates injured and orphaned sea otters and returns them to their environment. Captured in this book are photographs that show the wonderful, dedicated, sensitive people who dedicate their lives to saving sea otters. Throughout the book, staff and volunteers share their personal experiences. For example, there is Sue, who got her start in 1989 when she saw the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. She quit her job as a waitress, in Monterey, and headed for Alaska to help. Following that experience she returned to Monterey and became a staff member of SORAC. The staff allows you to peek through the door into the sea otters world and people who work to save them. There is just something about the furry, cuddly sea otters that captures your heart. It gives you a feeling of the importance of preserving our ocean for the wonderful creatures that inhabit it. 1999, Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation, Ages 13 to 18, $15.95. Reviewer: Leila Toledo

I love aquariums, especially the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  I love

I love aquariums, especially the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  I love sea otters and otters of all species.  And I love organizations and individuals who work towards improving the world and correcting some of the issues which mankind has inflicted upon this earth.

As such, it is not a surprise that I looked forward to reading my copy of Elin Kelsey's “Saving Sea Otters” - and I was not disappointed (*).  This book, VERY well illustrated with photography by Doc White, shows sea otters in their natural habitat, and in the artificial ones that circumstances have temporarily placed them in.  It talks about their rescuers, their mission, their process – and occasionally, their failures.  Basically, it is a love story – dedicated to a love of the otters and their protectors.  And as such, it succeeds tremendously.

I WOULD, however, encourage the author OR someone equally dedicated to use this as a springboard to a new project.  I believe that a full-length prose treatment of this process, telling the story of some of the rescuers and some of the rescuees – their emotional states at finding an otter, at rehabilitating it, and at releasing it (or worse, losing it) – the politics of a non-profit organization falling under the auspices of a larger non-profit – the day-to-day progress (or regress) of individual otters – would make an excellent full length text.

RATING: 5 stars.  It succeeds in what it set out to do, and it left some words and pictures that will not quickly leave my mind.

    Saving Sea Otters

'Saving Sea Otters' by Elin kelsey is a book dealing mainly with the plight of the southern sea otter and its dwindling population. The cover shows a furry little sea otter wrapped in a kelp bed.The book shows the behind-the-scenes work that researchers, scientists, veterinarians, volunteers and friends of the sea otter do. There are wonderful, clear pictures throughout the book showing the interaction between the sea otters and the people who care for them. Many times the sea otters are hurt, injured or unable to care for themselves and that's when the caretakers step in to nurse them back to health. Most of the book takes place in the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium and the waters of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary. If one is interested in sea otters, I would definitely recommend this book. Thank you...Don Bieber
