Overview

Savvy Auntie is the first go-to source for taking delight in the Savvy Auntie lifestyle, based on the popular website and written by America's foremost expert on modern Aunthood, Melanie Notkin. Whether she's an Auntie by Relation or Auntie by Choice, a Long-Distance Auntie or a Gay Auntie, America's fastest growing segment of women, the PANK (Professional Aunt No Kids), needs guidance and advice when it comes to the kids she adores. Why should their parents know all the secrets?

Savvy Auntie empowers sophisticated, educated, and independent aunts to connect with their inner-Savvy Auntie by sharing everything she needs to know from the minute she discovers her sister or friend is expecting, to confidently lending a hand with a newborn niece or nephew, to keeping up with the walking, talking growing-oh-so-fast bundles of energy, while coping with the occasional meltdown—including her own. Notkin provides a wealth of essential information and insight on child development, health and well-being, and spending 'QualAuntie' time with nieces and nephews. Plus she shares tips for baby showers, baby booty, birthdays and big kids.

Notkin also addresses the ultimate concern for the modern aunt: to have children or not, and if so, how? She offers savvy advice on living life to the fullest no matter the choice or circumstance. Chock full of sidebars, fun facts, and helpful anecdotes from every day Savvy Aunties, Savvy Auntie is the indispensable handbook for Aunties of all ages, and for every single, married or partnered woman navigating the ultimate celebration of life: children.

Editorial Reviews

Better Homes and Gardens
“[Notkin’s] site and new book are filled with smart, frank advice about being a positive aunt for kids.”
New York Times
“[Savvy Auntie is] an ‘all-inclusive guide’ for what [Notkin] calls PANKs: Professional Aunts No Kids. It’s a rallying girl-call in high chick-lit style: lots of hot pink and cheerful advice.”
Kirkus Reviews

A chic guide for new and experienced aunts that establishes theirvaluable family role.

Challenging the cultural stigma associated with childless women, Notkin creates a distinctive voice that draws attention to the value of an aunt's role in families. She addresses "every Savvy Auntie—or really, any grown woman—whose life doesn't fit the two-kids-one-husband-two-car-garage mold," and cursorily lists all the different types of aunt in an attempt at inclusion. The author addresses an audience that has ample time and resources, most evident in the sections "Gift-Giving Savvy" and "Money and Legal Savvy." Generous advice on how to cope with pregnancy envy and suggestions on how to increase fertility speaks to a particular group of women. Notkin does, however, include practical information, such as lists of birthing methods, infant care and safety tips. No matter what kind of aunt readers might be, the author urges them to think outside the box when she suggests that new aunts throw a party, "the DebutAunt Ball," to celebrate their unique role in the family. Advice and lists are sprinkled with witty puns that encompass the evolving role of the aunt and the changing nature of family in the modern era. Notkin ends with discussion points that can be used to bring together a supportive community of Savvy Aunties.

Communal childrearing at its finest.

    Great for 20 something aunties

The information in this book is pretty basic and nothing new for an older woman or someone who has been an aunt before. If you're going to be a first time aunt or have no experience with babies, it's a cute read with some fun advice. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who has a clue about babies.

    Auntie Mel is the best

Admittedly, I haven't read the book yet... but I've been following her webste since it's launch in 2008. Ms Notkin, along with the League of Savvy Aunties who follow her, have been there for me when I need to find: age appropriate crafts, behavior guidance, and so many other tips... without making me feel inferior like I did when I turned to the mommy sites. Ms Notkin writes with an open and effusive style which cannot help but inspire, so I think her book to become a bible to all aunties (particularly PANKs) across the globe. Who or what is a PANK? You'll have to read the book (or check the site) for that :-)
