    Not Osprey's best

The three cultures covered in this publication are too diverse to be given their dues in such a small book. The author tries to cover as much information as possible, but ends up leaving too much ground uncovered. Osprey books has published more detailed volumes dealing with these three cultures specifically, anyone interested would be much better served by tracking down the individual volumes. ('Saxon Thegn', 'The Vikings', 'Viking Hersir', 'Hastings 1066', and 'The Normans', all published by Osprey, yield much, much more info). One of the strong points of Osprey books is the richly-detailed, historically accurate color plates. The color plates in this book, however, are poorly-rendered and do not give enough attention to historical finds. Overall, an alright introduction for those interested in the three greatest Northern-European powers of the Dark Ages. Anyone whose interest extends beyond curiosity should turn to more specific books.
