Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Anita Barnes Lowen
On the day the baby was born, he was welcomed into the world with tears of joy and his very first book. His mother read about kindness and caring and whispered, "Say, Mommy!" because she hoped "Mommy" would be her baby's first word. Daddy read too, about dreams and wishes. When he closed the last page, he whispered "Say, Daddy!" because he hoped "Daddy" would be his baby's first word. Big Brother read, and so did Aunt Grace and Uncle Roy. Grandma read about families and how they celebrate joys and hug tears away. And each, when the last page was read, whispered their name and hoped that would be the baby's first word. But that oh-so-important first word was a surprise to everyone! A sweet book to read aloud to young children, this is heartwarming, full of love and with just a bit of humor, as in this passage: "When Uncle Roy closed the last page he tossed me high in the air, laughed and said, ‘Say, Uncle! Say, Uncle!' He hoped Uncle would be my first word. I just smelled funny. He gave me back to Mom." The, soft watercolor illustrations complement the text nicely. The book jacket lists the many benefits of reading to your child as well as several read-aloud tips. Reviewer: Anita Barnes Lowen

PreS- This story is narrated from the perspective of a newborn: "On the day I was born Mother welcomed me into the world with tears of joy and read me my first book." Daddy reads to his baby bear as soon as they come home from the hospital. One after another and over time, various family members share books with the baby, pointing out what wonderful adventures can be found within the pages. The stories convey important messages about kindness and caring, dreaming and making wishes come true, friendship, the value of laughter, and more. After reading aloud, each relative urges the child to say his or her name, but it's no surprise that the child's first word is "book" (though the father still hopes that the second one will be "Daddy"). Pastel watercolor illustrations heighten the dreamy, sweet, and cheerful atmosphere of this heavily messaged tale. Parents and caregivers make the best audience for this story, which would be useful in literacy and wellness programs for young families and will find a place in parenting collections along with Rosemary Wells's Read to Your Bunny (Scholastic, 1998).-Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH

    A Wonderfully Heartwarming Tale

What a heartwarming tale Michael has weaved for the reader! When a young bear comes home from the hospital, everyone in his family reads a book to him. They tell this child about all of the wonderful things in life that can be found between the pages of a book. When each family member finishes the book, they want the baby to say their name. Wait until you read what his first word is! 'Say Daddy' has the ability to make you smile, laugh, and cry. This book is a definite must for every child's collection, and for every parent who believes one of the most important jobs they have, is reading to their child.
