Overview

This handy reference gives health professionals the basic tools needed to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. Vocabulary lists and sample dialogs address situations commonly encountered in hospitals, clinics, physician's offices, or outpatient and community centers. It familiarizes readers with common words and phrases through consistent repetition and demonstrates how they are used in conversation. Questions that can be answered with a "yes" or "no" response are emphasized, designed to facilitate communication in emergency situations where rapid responses are needed. Pronunciations are provided both in the text and on an accompanying CD-ROM.

• Includes the words and phrases most commonly used by health professionals to eliminate the time-consuming process of looking up words in the dictionary.
• Specific questions that elicit yes or no answers assist health care providers with quickly obtaining essential information from patients.
• Sample dialogs cover common situations in the health care setting.
• Basic vocabulary such as numbers, colors, days of the weeks, and members of the family is included to facilitate conversations with Spanish-speaking patients.
• Vocabulary tables highlight basic vocabulary within the text for quick reference.
• Phrase and Sentence Index includes an alphabetical listing of all phrases and sentences used in chapter dialogs.
• An alphabetical Word Index allows easy access to specific words.
• Information on Hispanic culture and popular health beliefs helps readers provide culturally appropriate care.
• Pronunciations are provided for all sample dialogs and vocabulary so readers can speak with confidence.

• Three important new chapters have been added: Consent to Procedures/Surgery (Chapter 7); Discharging a Patient (Chapter 8); and Home Health/Hospice Care (Chapter 11).
• Organized according to health care settings such as the pediatrician's office, the emergency room, the cardiologist, and the home setting to make relevant phrases easy to locate.
• A CD-ROM containing audio recordings of sample dialogs is included with the book to reinforce correct pronunciations and train professionals to understand spoken Spanish.
• A bright, two-color design highlights headings and key features to make the book more visually appealing and useful.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Forrest Tracy Nichols
This book is written specifically for non-Spanish speaking medical personnel to learn important phrases that will improve communication. For the advanced or intermediate Spanish student, it will round out medical vocabulary. For the non-Spanish speaking person, it will provide basic communication skills. The purpose is to ease the frustrations of non-Spanish speaking providers who assess and care for Spanish speaking patients. Features include communicating simple facts, instructing, and understanding patients' needs. The authors' objectives are to increase Spanish vocabulary and improve communication with patients and family. These objectives are met in a well organized book. The target audience is anybody in the healthcare field that may have contact with the Spanish-speaking community. The authors are well qualified for this purpose as both are in the medical field and of Hispanic background. In Chapters 1-4 the focus is on specific topics such as pre-hospital care, admissions, and certain medical situations. In Chapters 5 and 6 the authors look at basic grammar. Cultural perspectives are provided in Chapter 7. This is the second edition to a 1996 release, with eight new chapters. This book is a comprehensive study, as medical terminology directions and anatomy are included. The authors have organized sections of specific topics in an easy to read format. There are also many non-medical terms and phrases included. This book is fully supported by black-and-white pictures and illustrations. Indexes include phrase and sentence translations followed by a word index. This book can be very useful to anyone who is learning Spanish, particularly anyone who practices medicine. It is a great tool to increase communication skills in an area where miscommunication could be disastrous. Readers may choose to learn just a few words and key phrases or continue with dedication becoming somewhat conversational. An audio cassette is included to aid with pronounciation. This handy paperback is packed with useful information, and new and useful chapters have been added to this second edition.

This book contains English phrases translated into Spanish and phonetically spelled out for use by health professionals. It will help non-Spanish speaking healthcare providers communicate with Spanish-speaking patients about first aid, emergency, home care, admitting, testing, and other clinical situations. The purpose is to help health professionals and students communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. The intent is to present practical language that can be used in clinical settings with Spanish speakers. The book is needed in communities with large Hispanic populations. The book meets the authors' objectives. This book is for professionals and students, primarily in medicine and nursing, although certain chapters are dedicated to other disciplines. As bilingual healthcare professionals, both authors are credible authorities. Only two chapters had references, although this is appropriate for this vocabulary-building book. The table of contents is adequate. Both a sentence index and a word index help access needed words and phrases. The presentation is professional. The book fits into a lab coat pocket. It is the only book of its kind that I am aware of. This book is valuable to nonnative Spanish speakers who work with non-English-speaking patients. The content is high quality. All terms needed for physical assessment and history-taking are included. Questions are worded to elicit a yes or no answer. This book is very useful to me because I had only one year of college Spanish. It is useful as a quick reference and should be available in libraries and nursing units with Spanish-speaking populations. The only missing component is in the cultural section. The authors donot mention the influence of Santeria and Brujeria on health beliefs and practices of Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and some South Americans.
