I'm traveling to China soon, and I've looked through nearly a dozen Chinese phrase books, pronunciation guides, and dictionaries to find a simple one that's well organized and geared towards someone who doesn't know any Chinese yet. This was one of the only two that offered a reasonably simple pronunciation guide along with both the Chinese and pinyin for each word or phrase. ("Just Enough Chinese" was the other.) "Say it Right in Chinese" uses a vowel symbol system to indicate the tones, and it seems to be a pretty good guide. A Chinese friend helped a little with my pronunciations, and what I had come up with just from using the book was very close to correct. The beginning section of Essential Words and Phrases is helpful, and it also includes a very brief English-Chinese dictionary at the end. There are some phrases that are slightly different from what my Chinese friend said to say, and I think it's just that the book's version is more formal, though it doesn't identify it as formal. My main complaint is that the book is slightly to large to fit easily into a pocket or smaller purse. It would be nice if it was a little more portable. However, I'm pretty happy with it overall. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

This is an extremely helpful book for those just learning to speak Chinese. It will not replace hearing Chinese spoken, but it is excellent for learning how the tones in spoken Chinese relate to one another. It augments reading Chinese in Pinyin because it corresponds to English phonetics more closely. I definitely recommend it.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
