Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Baumann
Rani's family is having a baby, and Grandma has arrived to care for her while Mom and Dad are at the hospital. Grandma is on the "trusted adult" list Rani's parents have created for her. Rani knows that it is safe for her to accept car rides and gifts from these adults. Various scenarios of stranger safety are discussed on every page, with an accompanying "Safety Tip" prominently displayed. Even Internet safety is discussed. Large brightly colored illustrations and simple text make this book a must purchase for schools, public libraries, and daycare facilities. The format is ideal for reading aloud to large groups such as story time. This book should be shared and discussed with all young children. A bibliography for further reading and a website for additional information about stranger safety is provided at the end of the book. This book is part of a four book series focusing on "How to Be Safe!" Reviewer: Nancy Baumann

PreS-Gr 1

Similar to the "How to Be Healthy series," these picture books feature a cast of diverse children, this time having fun as they incorporate safety measures into their lives. What makes this series different from others that cover safety is that, rather than providing illustrated safety tips, the books develop each topic within the framework of a story. Ajay's birthday gifts include bicycle gear that will protect him, Rico and his family follow fire safety rules when they go camping, and Rani plays computer games supervised by her grandmother (who makes sure the girl never reveals personal information online). These plots carry positive messages that are cautionary rather than alarmist. That feature, combined with engaging illustrations, makes the stories easy to follow and even appropriate for storytime.
