Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-- Detailed illustrations in Gibbons's traditional style and an informative, yet concise, text invite readers to follow a country veterinarian throughout his day's work. From the first page, young readers learn that going to see the vet is a lot like going to see the family doctor for check-ups and emergencies. A wide variety of animals, from kittens to cows, are treated with splints, medication, shots, ointment and, of course, TLC. Surgery is scheduled for 11:00 am; by 1:30 pm, the man has left the pale blue walls of the animal hospital for the bright green, rural landscapes. This vivid contrast in illustrations reminds children that the country vet extends his work to barns, farms, and even the roadside. The exact times of day are mentioned throughout the book and give a sense of the veterinarian's busy schedule. Carefully labeled medical tools and terms provide additional information. Nine steps to quality pet care conclude the book. This is a lively introduction to a subject of interest to most children, and would be a good companion to Gibbons's Farming (Holiday, 1988). --Myra R. Oleynik, Pleasant Valley Elementary School, McMurray, PA
Annie Ayres
For youngsters who are animal lovers or are anxious about taking a beloved pet to the veterinarian, Gibbons has created a cheerful and deceptively simple picture book that explains what it is that a veterinarian does. From first thing in the morning, when the waiting room is filled with people and their pets, through several examinations and a couple of operations and then an afternoon of making farm visits, the book follows a country veterinarian's day. The last pages contain a "Caring for Your Pet" section with nine general rules of good pet care. The straightforward text runs below brightly colored panel illustrations, within which Gibbons provides explanatory asides, pronunciation guides, definitions, and labels. There is some inconsistency here (for example, the veterinarian and his assistant are labeled, but the patients and their owners are not; the examining and operating rooms are labeled, but the waiting room and doctor's office are not). These minor flaws aside, this is a well-written and well-designed book for a very young audience on a very popular subject. The book will be sought out for career units and would work well in combination with such fiction as Rylant's "Henry and Mudge Get the Cold Shivers". For children who are ready for more realism and detail, Jaspersohn's "A Day in the Life of a Veterinarian" would be a good follow-up recommendation.
