Must Read - too good to miss!
Lord Miles Vickery saw himself as so many things - a consummate rake, prolific liar and all around good sport. What he never saw himself as was a sincere, worthy man capable of loving a woman for more than her money, but Miles is in danger of just that happening if he doesn't get himself under control.
When an ancient Dames' Tax requiring that all the village spinsters should marry within a 12-month time or forfeit half their fortune is revived Miles saw a way out of his desperate financial straits and keep himself out of debtor's prison. Burdened with a responsibility that he had been created by a father that was more sinner than saint the financial constraints were something he could not get under control. Selling everything off that the family owned or cared about was not going to even put a dent in the debt and his work for the government as a Guardian provided a modest but not overly abundant salary
Miles has found the answer to his prayers in Miss Alice Lister or so he hoped. She had not been born of money but an unexpected large inheritance had fallen to her when after serving as a housemaid her employer upon death passed all her money and possessions onto Alice. However, Miles had after courting Alice before left her for a bigger prize who threw him over for a higher title. So Miles finds himself back to convincing Alice that he truly is sincere with his feelings toward her but there is a huge catch - in order to marry Alice under the provisions of the will Miles must reveal the unvarnished truth for three months. Miles is determined to make this match even he is not so sure he can be a truth-teller for even a day let alone three months.
When desperation for a date sets in Miles resorts to blackmail to obtain the prize he desires - marriage to Alice and some debt relief. She fights, claws, kicks and runs every time he gets close but it is difficult to deny her feelings and outright passion she has for the man. When someone starts to make attempts on her life Miles kicks everything up a notch and makes sure she is safe in his arms as well as secure in his plans. While he does not believe in the curse of the Drum which follows him he does take precautions to make sure they are both alive to see their wedding day.
Just when Miles thinks he has everything under control an instinct other than greed is drawing him to Alice, one that he didn't care to exhibit or possess - love. Miles has worked hard to secure his family's future even though his family had turned on him in his youth. He kept his heart cold and his emotions well in check but with Alice nothing seemed to matter more than holding her in his arms, breathing in her heavenly scent and pressing his lips to hers. She was the sweetest of temptations but he kept reminding himself that she was just a monetary prize not an emotional gain.
What a wonderful second book in this series. It has every aspect of a perfect romance with a man not quite perfect, a woman not convinced of his intentions, high drama with relatives and an under lying story of passion and love. Miles and Alice are truly contentious characters who are so engaging when in the same room that you feel you are almost a voyeur to their conversations. While this is the second book in the series the groundwork of the first is laid out quickly and while you absolutely should read the first book you don't have to - but I highly recommend it.
