Children's Literature - Barbara Troisi
It is summer at Pumpkin Hallow Farm and out in the garden amidst the blooming crops stands a straw-filled scarecrow named Sam. A young boy, who would rather play than read while on vacation from school, roams through the garden and the two strike up a conversation about the values of reading. The boy's mother has placed a worn suitcase filled with classics by the scarecrow's pole in case Sam decides to travel. That is just what happens as the two bond and soon discover the magic of reading a multitude of exciting tales together, realizing that "books can take you anywhere." Despite the too lengthy rhyming text, there is plenty to celebrate in the rich, descriptive vocabulary and the splendor of nature painted in full-page illustrations. The inviting cover on the large book features Sam reading Robinson Crusoe and is appropriate for individual or group reading. Charming characters advocating the love of reading is a great theme for young readers to devour.

My children enjoy this story as much as i enjoy reading it to them. His choice of character, the scarecrow, makes it believable to turn a reluctant reader into an avid one.

Yes, Scarecrow Pete, books CAN take you anywhere!

A beautiful story that sends the message that you can go anywhere and do anything you want... in a book. One of my second graders said, 'He's right- books are treasures!' This story is well written and heartfelt. A must for all K-3 classrooms!!!
