Overview

Kat can see spirits, but what's even worse is the fact that spirits can also see her, especially the exceptionally needy ones. As this medium-in-training discovers, having an entourage of dead people can be kind of overwhelming-and a tad scary. So when an exploration of the abandoned house next door leads Kat and her best friend on a search for a missing boy, Kat's not sure if she wants to help—or even if she can.

Elizabeth Cody Kimmel's second Suddenly Supernatural book reminds readers that some things are even scarier than surviving middle school.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Kat sees dead people. The thirteen-year-old daughter of a medium, Kat has just begun to sense the presence of spirits, and the reality of her gift both frightens and intrigues her. As part of a class project, she takes pictures inside the abandoned house next door. Kat is surprised when the image of a young boy is revealed in one of her photos and the words "help me" appear on one of the house's windows. With her best friend Jac, she embarks on a search to learn more about the boy and find a way to help him. Further forays into the house reveal the spiritual presence of a malevolent old man whose anger terrifies Kat and almost causes her to abandon her investigation. It is not long before Kat learns that the boy, named Tank, is not dead. Rather, he is in an irreversible coma, and there is a disconnect between his physical body and his subconscious energy. Her mother's friend Orin, a healer, assures Kat that she can be the energy bridge to help the boy. So, Kat must summon the courage and the strength to attempt to bring Tank out of his coma. This is a solid ghost story with a very likeable heroine. Terms such as astral self, fifth chakra and spiritual orbs are tossed in with clarity and credulity; even if the reader is not sure what all of the technical jargon means, it does not slow down the suspense. That Kat is a typical middle schooler is evident in the preteen angst she feels about a lively subplot that involves cellist Jac and her overbearing mother. There is a hint of romance between Orin and Kat's mother. Since the issue of the angry old man is never solved, readers can be sure that Elizabeth Cody Kimmel is leaving the door wide open for a sequel. A large font, an invitingcover, and short, pithy chapters make this book very accessible. Girls who liked Kat's first ghostly encounter, School Spirit, will be delighted with her latest. Part of the "Suddenly Supernatural" series. Reviewer: Beverley Fahey
Children's Literature
The second book in the "Suddenly Supernatural" series continues to follow 7th-grader Kat as she struggles to come to terms with her new gift. Kat can now see spirits of dead people and finds herself surrounded by spectral orbs. When she decides to base a school photography project on the old house next door, she is surprised to see a young boy in the photo she takes. Exploring the house, she sees the boy but cannot communicate with him. Later, she finds the words "Help Me" written in the dust on the windowsill. Kat and her best friend Jac set out to solve the mystery. Orin Watkins, a spiritual healer and friend of Kat's mother, assists with the mystery. He also helps Kat come to terms with her gift, because although her mother is a medium and the two are quite close, Kat finds it difficult to discuss the spirits that now seem to surround her. Tension between them is heightened by Kat's mixed feelings about the possibility of her mother dating. At the same time, Jac's mother is pressuring Jac to devote her life to becoming a professional cellist and she finds herself rebelling. Kimmel presents an exciting and humorous story of typical 7th grade girls seeking adventure and coming to terms with life's choices. This book will have special appeal for young girls who enjoy spooky stories. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson

Gr 5-7

Ever since she learned that she could talk to the dead in School Spirit (Little, Brown, 2008), 13-year-old Kat has been doing her best to avoid otherworldly encounters. Her friend Jac, on the other hand, is fascinated with Kat's abilities and is anxious for another chance at ghost hunting. The girls are collaborating on a school project, investigating the history of a long-abandoned house, when a photograph reveals a boy's face at the window. When Kat enters the house, she sees the child playing, but he shows no awareness of her. The message "Help Me" scratched in the dust convinces her that supernatural forces are at work. The two friends discover that the house was the site of a serious accident three years earlier. Learning that the injured victim is still in a coma, they suspect that there may be a connection to the haunting. Kat visits the hospital, and recognizes the patient as the ghost child. Can she use her psychic powers to help him reconnect his spirit to its physical shell, before they become irretrievably separated? Kat and Jac are an engaging team. Their dialogue, both spoken and emailed, generally rings true. The mildly suspenseful plot moves briskly, although the writing style occasionally strays into rather heavy New Age mysticism. A few plot threads are left to be resolved in the next volume. An acceptable choice where there is a demand for supernatural fiction.-Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

    I Also Recommend:

A Great sequel!!-another amazing book by Mrs. Kimmel

What happense when a medium is afraid of the spirits and ghosts she sees? Kat is in that bad situation.

When Kat explores in the old abandoned house next door, things start to get out of control. The spirit of an angry old man frightens her, and there is another spirit of a young boy who doesn't realize Kat is in his house.

Now, shes's afraid of evil spirits and doesn't know what to do. Then, she meets Orin, a spirualitist. He's also a "friend" of Kat's mom.

Can Kat overcome her fears? Can she help the sprit of the young boy next door?? Read to find out!

Even though the first book was better, this sequel was still great!!

Reviewed by Sarah Bean the Green Bean Teen Queen for TeensReadToo.com

Middle School medium Kat is back, and this time there are even more ghosts following her around.

Kat and her friend, Jac, decide to explore the house next door as part of their spring break school project. But an abandoned house means ghosts, and when Kat meets the spirit of a young boy, she and Jac have another mystery to solve - and another spirit to help.

SUDDENLY SUPERNATURAL is the perfect paranormal series for tweens. Kat and Jac are great characters, and I think readers can relate to their middle school struggles. Jac is clashing over the future of her cello career with her mom and Kat herself is finding herself in that transition into teen-hood.

Elizabeth Cody Kimmel's tween voice is perfect and the mystery is enough to keep even older readers engaged. A fun, quick read for fans of ghost stories, I'm looking forward to the next installment in Kat's story.
