Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
Smurf is afraid of a lot of things. He is afraid of water so he cannot swim with his friends, and when he hides in a barrel another smurf jumps out and scares him. Actually, Scaredy Smurf likes to play alone and when he does, he is never afraid and other smurfs do not laugh at him. One time when he went home, he thought he was alone, but there was a spider waiting for him. When Scaredy Smurf jumped on the table he scared the spider who hid under a cabinet. They both just looked at each other and cautiously came out to meet each other. They talked and then became friends. When the other smurfs saw the spider they were also afraid, so Scaredy Smurf told them that the spider was his pet; they were still afraid and said the spider should go back to the woods where he would be happier. Scaredy Smurf learned that everyone gets afraid of something sometimes and you just have to learn to face your fears and never ever tease someone when they are afraid of something. The message is great, the illustrations add so much to the story, and it is perfect both to read-a loud and for a beginning reader. The author has taken a tough subject for little ones and has provided a great solution for being afraid. This book is good for both boys and girls. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
