Palmer's debut was a sensation in England and is destined for success here as well. This is a sleek and alluring tale of manipulation that pits a drop-dead gorgeous adventuress against a very proper and kind upper-class matron. Their subtle battle royal is over the Marchant estate, a considerable prize. The eldest Marchant son, George, seems to be drifting into a respectable bachelorhood until he travels to Rome on extended business and is bewitched by the diabolical Camilla Vane. Harshly beautiful, far too polished, and suspiciously enigmatic, Camilla turns sensible George's head. They marry, but before Camilla can even begin to spend George's money, his father dies, and he insists that they move into the Marchant manor. Camilla abhors the English countryside, and George's family is collectively appalled by the unwelcome addition to their somewhat shaky ranks. They, of course, harbor their own naughty secrets, such as the fact that George's twin brothers are in effect sharing a wife, but none of her in-laws are prepared for Camilla's cold-blooded avarice. Each twist in this tightly spun plot, whether involving sudden death, crass seduction, blackmail, theft, or other less-overt betrayals, is rendered in meticulous and suspenseful detail. Palmer has cleverly melded key elements of gothic romance with the structure of psychological thrillers and achieved a creation that defines entertainment.
