Scarlet Sails. Alexander Grin. English Edition

Alexander Grin's(1880-1932) novel Scarlet Sails is a romantic fantasy, and powerful love story. Perhaps the most famous of Grin's works.

The setting is a small fishing village. The former seaman Longren raises his daughter Assol alone after losing his beloved wife, making a meager living by selling the toy boats he carves from wood. As a child, Assol encounters an old man who claims to be a wizard and promises the girl that one day a prince will come on a ship with scarlet sails to carry her away. The villagers scoff but Assol believes her dream will come true one day.

Arthur Gray is a nobleman's son who breaks away from his cruel father to pursue a life at sea as he dreamt from his childhood. He eventually becomes the captain of a merchant vessel. Having set to port at Assol's village, he spies the young maiden sleeping in the forest and falls in love. After enquiring in the village he learns of Assol's dream and sets about making it come true.

Gray sailed to Assol under scarlet sails, he put her on the ship, and they sailed away to be happy together.

Scarlet Sails, a beloved Russian fairy-tale for adults and children alike, is a story about dreams coming true, no matter how silly or futile or far-fetched they may seem.

The meaning of this novel is that people need to have hopes about their dreams. You just need to believe in it with all your heart in spite of everything. This novel shines in explaining how it is in our power to make little miracles happen. The captain, Arthur Gray’s final speech: “I have come to the person who is waiting only for me. I want only her, perhaps for the precise reason that thanks to her I have been able to understand one simple truth; that so-called miracles are made with one's own hands. But there are other miracles: a smile, gladness, forgiveness, and a word which is needed and said in time. To experience them is to possess everything. As for Assol and me, we will remain forever in the glow of scarlet sails created in the depths of a heart that knows what love is...”

This novel speaks to the inner romantic parts of people’s hearts, those who patiently wait for a bit of wish-fulfillment in their lives. It can melt any soul with its simple beauty.

Meet the Author

Alexander Grin (1880-1932) was a Russian writer with a powerful and unique writing style in the entire Russian literature.

Despite his challenging life with poverty, health and conflicts with the Government, he was able to create timeless, romantic novels, poems and short stories. Many of them deal with the sea, adventures and love. He devoted most of his works to his beloved wife.

By the 1920's, Soviet censors began to put pressure on Grin as his writings came into conflict with ideological principles of the communist party. So his publications were getting scarcer and scarcer. In 1932 he died of lung cancer. After Stalin's death in 1953, Grin's work experienced a revival.

His amazing novels are a symbol of strengthened penmanship removed from the tragic reality of the dream of human happiness.
