Overview

They were once orphans from London's roughest slums. Now they are stuidents of Mrs. Merlin's Academy for Select Young Ladies, learning the techniques of spying and seduction. Bold, beautiful, and oh-so-dangerous, they are England's ultimate secret weapons...
The most ladylike of "Merlin's Maidens," Sofia possesses a natural grace and grandeur to go along with her deadly arsenal of martial skills—which makes her the perfect choice for a dangerous assignment to investigate rumors of government corruption. She must spin through the glittering ballrooms of Mayfair and the sinister back alleys of the city in search of the truth. One misstep on her part could prove fatal as she works to unravel the tangled web of deceit...but keeping the sinfully sexy Deverill Osborne at arm's length is a real test of her mettle. Handsome, witty and charming, Osborne is the darling of the ton. So when he is asked by the Marquess of Lynsley to introduce a lovely young Italian contessa into Society, he is only too happy to oblige...however he soon has suspicions about the contessa. W hen he catches her stealing valuables from a gentleman's study, should he believe the worst? Or should he trust the tantalizing murmur of her words...and the sultry, sensuous whispers of her body. To unmask the conspirators, Sofia and Osborne will overcome hidden dangers, including their own growing passion...which may be the most dangerous force of all.

If you are a unique orphan in St. Giles, you will be chosen by the Marquess of Lynsley, to attend the Mrs. Merlin's Academy for Selected Young Ladies! The Academy is actually a spy school, who trains exceptional females to ride horses like the wind, fight with their hands and feet, make knives fly and always hit there mark, shoot moving targets with pistols, fence like a champion, flirt and seduce like a seasoned courtesan and to use the clever and intelligent minds that God gave them. Only 3 women have passed, Siena, Shannon and Sofia and this is Sofia's story.

Sofia can ride, fight, fence, flirt, seduce, shoot and throw knives. She does have one secret from her past that she treasures, a old locket with a painted face inside, and she prays that there might be a family out there, just for her. Sofia has the most deceptive, must conform to her surroundings and dangerous mission, she must become the widow Italian Contessa Lady Sofia and investigate the Scarlet Knights, search for the golden poppy keys, solve a Duke's grandson murder and most importantly be a stylish, fashionable and desirable young woman of the snobby Ton.

Lord Deverill Osbourne is the bored Lord Sunshine of the Ton. He is bored with his mistress, balls, soirée, musicals and all Season commitments. So when Lord Lynsley asks him to introduce his dear friend's daughter around this Season, he agrees out of boredom.

Osbourne is shocked at what a beautiful, sensual and awe inspiring vision Lady Sofia is. Sofia is very attracted to tall, yummy and sexy Osbourne, but he is too close, so she must lose him with rudeness, avoidance and tall palms, when necessary. He thinks the lady is too smart and sensible to be around the scandalous Scarlet Knights members, but there is something about her that doesn't match up. Sofia flirts, sneaks around, looks for clues and when caught red handed by Osbourne stealing, she goes in for his seduction. It works, until they are interrupted, he steals the poppy snuff box back, starts asking all the right questions and tells her to meet him at her home to answer his questions.

Osborne watches in horror, as Sofia is attacked by footpads with clubs, knives and pistols, so he jumps in to help the helpless female. He is surprised when she saves his butt, but she is unmasked by her torn bodice and tattoo of a Merlin on her breast. They begin a dance of mystery, unanswered question, toe curling kisses, surprising discoveries, a ring of dastardly enemies of the Crown, dangerous caresses and unearthing Sofia's past. Can Sofia solve and destroy all these hidden adversaries? Will Osbourne let Sofia be the unusual, proud and gifted spy that she is? Can their unchained desire lead to understanding and love? Who is the leader of the evil Scarlet Knights? Will the duke get his justice?

This is the 3rd book of this Spy series and I really love the first with Siena and Kirtland. I just got Shannon story today and kinda wished I could of read it before this one. Ms. Pickens (Cara Elliott) has such a flair for great, life like and flawed characters and she made Sofia and Deverill perfect for one another. Sofia just wants to be accepted, loved and uncover her past. Deverill just wants to make a deference in the real world and spying was just the next illogical step. The steamy scenes were a little tame for me, but I still enjoyed the adventure. Ms. Pickens gets a score of 3 fingers up and 8 toes.

Only read the first 25 pages.

I can usually tell if I'll enjoy a book within the first couple chapters. With this one, I had to struggle to give the first 25 pages a chance. What I read of it just seemed silly and the writing was too confoluted. Maybe I should have given it a chance but it just didn't feel like it would be worth it.

    I Also Recommend:

    The Scarlet Spy

Interesting plotline. Different from any other historical romances available currently. This is the third book in the series. I love the idea that the women are just as good as shooting, riding and manipulations as they are at dancing, conversation and beauty.

    Entertaining...

    The Scarlet Spy
Andrea Pickens
ISBN-0-446-61801-2
Grand Central Publishing
Hachette Book Group
October 2008
Review by Laura for Reviewyourbook.com
4 stars
Entertaining¿
The Scarlet Spy by Andrea Pickens is the third book in a trilogy about a school for young ladies set in the Regency time period. This school takes orphan girls off the streets of London and teaches them the art of spying. I have not had the opportunity to read either of the other books, but I found this one to be entertaining. It took me several chapters to become truly interested, and, at times, I found it to be predictable; nonetheless, I did enjoy the read and found the last chapters to be true sit-in-your-seat page turners. I definitely recommend it to fans of historical romance and will put this author on my list of preferred authors.
