Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leah Hanson
From playing a young girl trying to recover from a horse-riding accident to playing a Russian spy, Scarlett Johansson's career is unique not only in the roles she has played, but in her deft maneuvering of the transition from child actor to Hollywood superstar. Of her childhood, Johansson claims "I was like a singing, dancing fool," and by the time she was eight years old, she knew she wanted to act. With the help of her dedicated mother, Scarlett auditioned for television commercials, enrolled in acting classes, and studied the work of established actors, always seeking her own big break. Such a breakout role came in Robert Redford's film The Horse Whisperer which garnered Johansson critical acclaim and launched her into the Hollywood limelight. Her work in film, on stage, and with charitable organizations is chronicled in this volume in the "People to Know Today" series. Although the author attempts to give readers a more intimate view of the actor, the rhythm of the text is too often interrupted by what seem like sidebar conversations on tangential topics, resulting in a disjointed, hazy picture of who Johansson really is. The star's admitted reluctance to talking about her private life could account for the difficulty in painting that more intimate portrait, and the research relies heavily on second-hand sources. Devoted fans will appreciate the book, but casual readers may find it lacking. Reviewer: Leah Hanson
