Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Getting lost in the city is scary. However, a small, lost, orange-striped cat keeps its cool as it treks around the city. The cat walks and walks but is clearly not welcome in the city. It finds a dog that says, "Scat, Cat!" The same takes place when the cat encounters three gray and white birds, three scrappy cats, and a barber, baker, and school bus driver. More of the same happens when the cat meets a pond frog, a mother goose, an owl, a bat, and a skunk that chases the cat from a hollow log. By nighttime the cat is so tired it climbs onto a porch and falls asleep in a soft chair. When the cat awakes it is very happy to see the little boy who had lost the cat. The boy, who lives in the house, greets him with friendly words since he is glad the cat is back. This simple, charming story moves forward with every turn of the page. It consists of mostly one syllable words that emergent readers will pick up easily. The repetition of the phrase, "Scat, cat especially reinforces reading in this level one reader from the "I Can Read!" series and the satisfying ending is sure to please young readers.
