A New York Times bestseller, it won the prestigious Bram Stoker Award and earned numerous critical raves. Scavenger, Morrell’s latest novel, takes us in a harrowing new direction-a desperate high-tech scavenger hunt for a 100-year-old time capsule. Frank Balenger, the resolute but damaged hero of Creepers, now finds himself trapped in a nightmarish game of fear and death. To save himself and the woman he loves, he must play by the rules of a god-like Game Master with an obsession for unearthing the past. But sometimes the past is buried for a reason. Scavenger is a brilliant and frightening hunter-hunted tale that layers modern technology over the dusty artifacts of earlier times. The result is a surreal palimpsest, one that contains the secret of survival for Balenger and a handful of unwilling players who race against the game’s clock to solve the puzzle of the time capsule, only to discover that time is the true scavenger. Morrell’s trademark action sequences are embedded with fascinating historical clues that make Scavenger a thrill-a-minute page-turner as well as a mesmerizing literary experience.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This unwieldy thriller from bestseller Morrell (First Blood) becomes so caught up in its headlong action that it never stops to explore the possibilities of its intriguing premise. Frank Balenger, the emotionally banged-up hero of the Stoker Award–winning Creepers(2005), finds he must play an elaborate time-travel game to save himself and his lover, blonde, blue-eyed Amanda Evert, who reminds him so much of his late wife. The nefarious Adrian Murdock, a history professor at Atlanta's Oglethorpe University and a member of the Time Capsule Society, sends the pair on a hunt through time that keeps them in constant danger as they attempt to discover the secret of a series of time capsules. While Morrell delivers race-against-the-clock thrills with his usual aplomb and does a good job educating the reader about actual time capsules, the minimal characterization makes it hard to care about Balenger and Amanda. Video gamers will be most satisfied. 15-city author tour.(Mar.)

Library Journal
Morrell introduced readers to the somewhat esoteric concept of urban exploration with his Bram Stoker Award-winning Creepers. With this sequel, he tantalizes with a page-a-minute thriller on another fairly obscure pastime, geocaching, which involves hiding an object and then leaving a series of clues or coordinates to follow so that object can be found. Frank and Amanda, the only survivors of an incident at the Paragon Hotel, are swept into a deadly situation by a devious video game designer. Amanda is kidnapped, and while Frank searches for her, she is forced to search for a geocached time capsule in a Roanoke-like town in Wyoming. Told in near real time, the novel is fraught with tension and ever-ratcheting suspense; the tight, fast-paced plot races along at breakneck speed. As is typical of Morrell, not much internal character thought or motivation is given; the characters are developed mostly through their actions and interactions with one another. Good for public libraries, especially where suspense/thrillers are popular.

A high tech and frightening glimpse into the mind of an evil genius.

This book is the second in a series. You should definitely read Creepers before you read this one, since Frank Balenger is back, along with his love, Amanda. The couple attend a lecture on time capsules, but Frank awakens from an unanticipated sleep and finds himself in a park, but without Amanda. His search for her and Amanda's entrapment in a deadly scavenger game will keep you glued to this book until you have finished it. Start reading this book early in the day, or you will get no sleep. The story takes Balenger and Amanda through a deadly search for a time capsule, the Sepulcher of the World. To survive, the five trapped people must find the capsule within a certain time limit, or die. There are many twists and turns in the story, most of them unexpected, until the final chapter of this book. Morrell again proves himself the Grand Master of thrillers.

    Very Highly Recommended

This is an amazing, captivating and thrilling story from beginning to end. A true page-turner that is difficult to put down. Just one more chapter. Just one more chapter. Excitement and tension builds to a surprising and satisfying end. The story is profound on many levels. And the author's note at the end makes this book a grand slam of a deal and a "must have" for everyone's library.

David Morrell is not merely the creator of Rambo. He is also a magnificent teacher who generously shares his knowledge and talent with his readers.

    I Also Recommend:

More Frank Balenger, can't get enough.

I found this on the discount rack and was thrilled. This is the 2nd book involving Frank Balenger. Balenger is one of the most engaging characters I have every ran across.

Without giving away too much, this centers on a scavenger hunt which can turn deadly at any moment. Like a video game with real, flesh and blood, characters.

The lead character, Balenger, brings this above other stories with similar plots.

    Solid if unthrilling effort

Have to say I've liked Morrell's other works far more than this one - never felt pulled into the characters, seemed a bit too contrived to so easily find the location the hunt was happening at - thought the desert setting had promise that was ultimately was unrealized - all in all a bit of a disappointment.

    pulse thumping powerful thriller

When a hand written invitation to attend a lecture on time capsules given by the Manhattan History Club arrives, Frank Balenger and his live in lover Amanda decide to go. During the lecture, people start getting up and leaving in the middle of the speech Frank zones out and wakes up in Asbury Park and Amanda is nowhere to be found. --- She awakens in a house in the middle of nowhere while the same speech given by the lecturer is playing. Four other people are with her and in one way or another they are all heroes. The game master expects them to go on an obstacle race and scavenger hunt and find the time capsule the Sepulcher of the World if they want to live. The game master has ways of keeping track of them and is able to kill them long distance if they don¿t obey the rules. While they race against time to find the time capsule, Frank is following clues that will lead to Amanda if he deciphers them right. Their goal is getting out alive before the game master¿s time limit expires. --- David Morrell is a thriller writer on a par with Dean Koontz, Greg Iles and P.J. Tracy. His protagonists are ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstance but they are determined, and strong-willed enough to help each other survive the game. The author writes about characters under fire and how it brings out the best in some and the worst in others. There is plenty of action in this fast paced pulse thumping powerful thriller. --- Harriet Klausner
