Free Friday, published in 1989. Characters did not have cell phones, computers and used roledexes. I found it so funny because everyone had to run all over the place trying to find telephones. It this book had been updated before it was republished, it would have been a lot better. It was an interesting read and a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. The book is 180 pages long, well edited and has a good flow. There is some cursing, a lot of murder, some of them rather gory, a few sexual situations and a simple romance. The mystery is different from the usual fare and whodunit is not immediately evident. It was a better free Friday offering then most. AD

Lots of characters to try to figure out who actually killed him! Kept my interest throughout--Brought in multiple characters from the bums on the street to corporate executives to figure out which one was the murderer! You'll like this one!!!

Great plotting, believable characters, terrific setting. I almost didn't complete rhe book because of the heavy-handed use of similes and metaphors, but that would have been a mistake on my part.

This was a Free Friday Nook book and I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to discover this author. though The story takes place in 1987, therefore we have to remember that there weren't any cell phones and in many ways this simple fact increases the tension in this wonderful mystery. I've ordered the second book in this series.

Excellent, fast-paced old fashioned mystery. Lots of twists and turns to this story. Keeps you guessing until the end. To those who gave this book only 1-3 stars because it was "dated" - remember that thousands of events took place prior to 2013 - it's called HISTORY. Just because the people and story are set in the 1980's doesn't mean that the writing isn't excellent. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good down to earth mystery and to those fans who enjoy writers like Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton.

This book takes place before everyone had a cell phone, which dates it. However, it has an intriguing style that pulled me in and kept me turning pages. As some of the best mysteries have proven, adding an element of grittiness, or noir, makes for atmosphere, which this book has. This book was free, but I will be buying the next one in the series. Nice find.

I enjoyed this book. The writing is witty and the central character reminded me of Kinsey Milhone, another favorite. I'm amused by the reviewers who called the book "dated" and objected to the lack of cellphones and laptops. The book was published in 1987, okay? I have no objection to older titles being offered as Free on Friday selections; it gives me a chance to discover authors I missed when they first publushed. I fully expect the sequel to reflect the same period (it was published in 1990). I googled the author and found that she only wrote two Finny Aletter books before switching to another genre. So I can cheerfully invest $4 in Book 2 without worrying that I am spending too much for a long series. Lighten up, folks. Authors deserve to earn royalties for good writing!

Caught up in story from the start. Characters developed nicely. Look forward to enjoying more adventures of Nell and Will. There is more to tell about Nell's past and Will is the person she will trust.

The fact that this book takes place in the 80's didn't bother me. It really didn't mention much about technology so not an issue. It was a good light mystery. The main character and the detective did fall for each other rather quickly and not much to base a romance on but maybe it goes more into in the next book. Overall I would recommend it.

The book was a light read that unfortunately seem to fall apart at the end. I think the author wasn't sure how to logically end the book, so she just threw anything and everything together for a conclusion.
