Overview

When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lt. Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but finds that he’s too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there’s a leak on the force.

Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

Fast-paced and intricately-plotted, with the unflinching attention to forensic detail that his readers have come to expect, Scent of Evil is the third of Archer Mayor’s critically-acclaimed Joe Gunther mysteries.

Editorial Reviews

Charles Champlin
Mayor has a way with white-knuckle final scenes, and he does it again in this atmospheric story whose gee-whiz events somehow retain their credibility, even in Brattleboro.
Marilyn Stasio
Devotees of that picturesque genre propre, the village mystery, will be amazed at the amount of grit and gore that Mr. Mayor can dig up in a town with a population of 12,000 souls. The author isn't afraid to look on its dark side. Like his flinty hero, her doesn't blink when the action wheels in to the operating room for a bloody medical procedure or screeches down the highway on a high-speed car chase. As rugged as those mountains in the background, this virile series should only last as long.

Meet the Author

Over the years, Archer Mayor has been photographer, teacher, historian, scholarly editor, feature writer, travel writer, lab technician, political advance man, medical illustrator, newspaper writer, history researcher, publications consultant, constable, and EMT/firefighter. He is also half Argentine, speaks two languages, and has lived in several countries on two continents.

All of which makes makes him restless, curious, unemployable, or all three. Whatever he is, it’s clearly not cured, since he’s currently a novelist, a death investigator for Vermont’s medical examiner, and a police officer.

Mayor has been producing the Joe Gunther novels since 1988, some of which have made the “ten best” or “most notable” lists of the Los Angeles and the New York Times. In 2004 Mayor received the New England Booksellers Association book award for fiction.

    Excellent Mystery!

If you love murder mysteries, this is for you! you have almost 10 suspects and all have motives and evidence aganist them. when the detective hits a dead end, you feel as devistated as he does. and when a new clue breaks, you just cant put this book down. you have several different angles that just dont fit togehter, until you know who the killer is. then it hit me like a brick, everything made sense. a must read!
