The Scent of Jasmine (Edilean Series #5)

Very Good Series, ebooks have flaws.

First let me say I love it when Ms. Deveraux writes books in series, and the Edilean series is very good. I recently purchased a NookColor, which I love. I was excited to again start reading Ms. Deveraux's books again. But I have to say I am a bit disappointed. I've read the five books currently available in the six book "Edilean" series. I'm not sure if Barnes and Noble is responsible for my disappointments or if Ms. Deveraux is responsible, but I believe it is a combination of the two. In the first book I found a reference to a character and the name was wrong, page 177 "Joce and Luke", should be "Ingrid and Luke". Throughout each book every time the word "historical" is used, the word "an" is before it, this is grammatically wrong, and hard to read time after time. These are probably issues that should be direct to Ms. Deveraux. However, having the ebooks numbered incorrectly, whose fault is that? I just finished #5 which has a preview for #3 which clearly indicates that "Scarlet Nights" #3 is after "The Scent of Jasmine" #5. Also, on every page of the story portion of the ebook version of The Scent of Jasmine in the top left corner is "Judge deveraux" so the name of the author is wrong on every page and the author's last name is not capitalized. Who is responsible for that? Now let's talk about ebook number #4 in this series, the fault of both Barnes and Noble and Ms. Deveraux. Having read five of the six books in this series, I have to ask, what were these people thinking? First #4 is not anything more than a seventy page short story, and completely unnecessary to the series as a whole. The enhanced portion of this book, which by the way this book is only available in NookColor format, is video. I was hopeful that the videos would add to the story. They do not. To make matters worse, the videos are all of poor quality and have a very amateurish feel to them. Again I have to ask, what were these people thinking? If I was buying this series as regular paper versions, I would be extremely upset that book #4 in the series was unavailable to me. The story series is very good, and I still love my NookColor and Ms. Deveraux is still one of my all time fav romance writers (I've read probably more than 20/25 of her books), but I am disappointed in the execution of these books to electronic format. Please someone tell me where is the quality control and editors when these conversions are done?

I love the Edilean books. Jude Deveraux never lets you down, this series is a must.

love the whole series

although I haven't read this #5 in the series, I am looking forward to it. I am only concerned because #4 was not offered in a book form or ebook form. Only on Nook color. Not happy about that one.

Wonderful read!

This book will pull you in and make you want to read the whole series. If you like historical romances, romances in present day, and or mysteries you will love this book.

Not the best ....but not the worst

I thought it was a cute read. It was not the best JD because it did bog down in some places, but overall I am glad I read it.

Worst Deveraux I ever read- couldn't even finish it!

I have read Jude Deveraux for years, and have enjoyed all the previous books in this series, but this one just left me cold. The heroine is too stubborn to be true, the hero is too broody by half and the plot was dull. One of the few books that I didn't force myself to finish! Here's hoping the next in this series is much better. I'd hate to loose Deveraux as an author I love to read.

An Eloquent Eighteenth Century Tale of Adventure, Mystery and Romance

The Scent of Jasmine written by famed historical romance novelist, Jude Deveraux is an enchanting story filled with intrigue, romance, and suspense, as it follows a spunky young woman of southern gentility, and a tortured Scot who is desperate to discover why he was framed for his wife's tragic murder. The story begins when the heroine Cay Harcourt's sense of adventure is piqued, when she visits her ill godfather in South Carolina, where he asks her to deliver a packed horse to his old friend's son. The only catch is that the son has just escaped from prison for murdering his wife. Trusting in her godfather's seemingly blind faith in the man's innocence, Cay agrees to fulfill the mission. Unfortunately, the mission does not go quite as planned. Soon, Cay finds herself being stalked by the fugitive's pursuers and ends up riding into the wilderness with the mysterious Scottish fugitive, Alex McDowell. While seeking refuge in the Florida everglades, Cay learns that Alex was framed and aids him in his search to find who framed him, and why his wife was killed. Along the way, Cay and Alex build a kind of trust that only two people fleeing danger can build, leading to their inevitable romance. The Scent of Jasmine presents many different themes to the reader, as there are countless aspects of this story. One major theme in the novel was society's inability to trust in a person's known character and to look past popular opinion and gossip. This is evident in Alex's struggle to eventually clear his name, as all of his close friends abandoned him, all believing that he in fact brutally murdered his wife. Alex soon discovers that not all friends are really worth trusting. Another prevalent theme in the novel is the idea that true love cannot be based upon instant attraction, but to time of getting to know a person and learning about who they truly are and what matters to them. This theme is discovered when Alex discovers that true compatibility does not come with "love at first sight," but with built knowledge and experience with a person, which he learned in his relationship with Cay. There were many features in this novel that intrigued my interest and some that bored me. One of my favorite aspects in the novel was the contrast in personalities between Alex and Cay, which is evident in their constant banter and teasing. They are the epitome of the relationship where both parties love each other's flaws. One aspect of the novel that bothered me was that Deveraux didn't go into specific detail of how Alex and his wife met, and the night he was framed. This bothered me because, solving the mystery of Alex's wife's murder was a major theme in the book, and it the specific details of the night he was betrayed were largely overlooked, making the background information incomplete. I believe that this book is worthy of someone else reading, because it explores many prevalent themes in today's society, while learning about customs and traditions in an older time period. Overall, I would rate this book four out of five stars, at it is quite entertaining with its complex characters and intriguing storyline, but it's details in the plot remain a tad confusing. Other works by Jude Deveraux that are recommended is the 1940s historical novel, Scarlet Nights, and the eighteenth century novel, Days of Gold, which takes place in the Highlands of Scotland.

Huge Disappointment--Dull and Boring

Its hard to believe this was written by Jude Deveraux. I'm only writing this because of the shock it was by her. I usually love her books, but I can barely finish this one. I was sick of it 1/4 of the way through. I'm 3/4 through now and the only reason I am finishing it is because I spent $7.99 for it. Its taken me a week to get this far and I usually finish in a day. The characters are ok, there is just no magic between the mains. All they do is travel and talk a lot about people whom I don't think we'll ever meet. Only one character was interesting, the main female's godfather, and we haven't seen him since the beginning. I suspect we may see him at the end, but we sure hear about him a lot. whoopee. This was a huge disappointment, totally dull and boring. I've read $2.96 no-name author books that were more fun and interesting.

Fast moving, adventure story that will hold you tightly 'till the end !

Jude Deveraux is one of my favorite authors and she proved once again that she can just keep churning out the good stories. Young Cay (female), who is excited about life and ready to explore finds a little more than she bargained for in the Everglades. She completely misunderstands the man she was to help but starts to discover more & more as they go along on their flight to keep him from being strung up for the murder of his wife. The story takes some surprising & very interesting turns. It's a great read - you won't regret the time spent with these characters.

Great book!

The Scent of Jasmine offers a lot for those (like myself) who love to read. You have drama (in the form of a prison escape), adventure (traveling to the "wilds" of Florida), mystery (what happened to Alex's wife?), romance (my fave!) oh and don't forget, alligators! Once you start reading this book you will not be able to put it down!

A FUN,EXCITING HISTORICAL ROMANCE/FICTION SET IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND FLORIDA EVERGLADES!

THE SCENT OF JASMINE by Jude Deveraux is a historical romance set in 1799 Charleston, South Carolina and the Florida Everglades. It is well written with depth and details.It is the fourth in "The Edilean Series".Book One "Lavender Morning",Book two "Days of Gold",Book three " Scarlet Nights",and can be read as a stand alone,although each book gives a little history into Edilean.It has mystery,betrayal,deceit, romance,heart pounding adventure, love,friendship,banter,humor,sweet sensuality,trust, and learning to know each other during times of extreme hardship. The plot flows easily and the characters are interesting,and entertaining.The hero,Alex, is Scottish, handsome,accused of the murder of his wife,escapes prison, determined to learn the truth of his wife's death,strong and devastated by his wife's death,although they where only married for a few hours. She was killed on their wedding night,while he slept. The heroine, Cay, is beautiful, witty, strong, has a adventurous spirit,agrees to deliver a package to the escaped convict. But things go wrong, and she and Alex is caught up in a quest for survival. Cay finds herself being attracted to Alex,although she believes him to be "old and ugly",he smells of prison stench and filth. Alex, while trying to keep away from Cay soon finds himself attracted to her also. As they track through the countryside of South Carolina and the Florida Everglades trying to avoid being capture. Alex is determined to find the truth about who killed his wife,why and prove his innocence. He enlists the help of his childhood friend, Cay's brother.Together Alex and Cay learn to trust each other and begin to fall in love. This is a fast paced, action paced,heart pounding adventure story of the journey from friend to lover,proving ones innocence,worth, and finding true love through difficult times.I would recommend this book especially if you enjoy fast paced,adventure and love. A great addition to the Edilean series

This is an excellent book which gives a peak at some more Edilean family history. I was hooked from page one and now that I am done, I am looking forward to more of Jude's books!

I was swept away by The Scent of Jasmine. I was sucked in within the first few pages and Jude kept me intrigued throughout the entire book. I haven't quite decided which part of the book I liked more, the historical aspect or the steamy, sensual romance. The characters are easy to relate to and the story flows. I recommend this book to historical romance fans.

a wonderful late eighteenth century tale

In 1799, Virginia artist Catherine Edilean Harcourt has a lot of potential suitors, but she has no interest in marrying any of them. She visits her ailing godfather T.C. Connor in Charleston who because of a broken leg that keeps him from getting around asks adventurous Catherine to deliver a packhorse for him. Dressed for a ball she will attend after her good deed, Catherine goes to give the steed to escaped convict Alexander McDowell, who just broke out of prison.

However, the drop off fails to go according to plan as hunters chase stalk Alex who takes Cay with him while fleeing south to the Everglades. There she pretends to be a young male nature artist while Alex sets out to prove he never murdered his wife. Trying to rescue their assumed kidnapped as a hostage sister, Cay's three raging brothers follow their trail.

The latest Edilean historical romance (see Lavender Morning and Days of Gold) is a wonderful late eighteenth century tale starring two warm lead protagonists. The Everglades is a terrific setting as the artist thrives while the convict worries about his "prisoner" who has turned his heart into her hostage. Readers will relish the return to Edilean; in which ironically that setting hardly appears.
