Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, DO, MA (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is an excellent new book covering treatment aspects of schizophrenia. Written and edited by internationally recognized experts in the field, this book is a valuable contribution to psychiatry.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the editors, is to provide a comprehensive, critical, and clinically useful overview of the current knowledge about the treatment of schizophrenia. The editors intend to"provide clinicians with practical treatment recommendations for the optimal care of individuals with schizophrenia." The editors state, "our goal is to present state-of-the-art treatment practices that are based on scientific evidence, and when the evidence is not available, to provide expert opinion, including our own clinical experience." The editors have succeeded in producing a very useful treatment guide for clinicians.
Audience: The intended audience is psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, students, and trainees.
Features: The book is divided into 14 chapters grouped into three sections and includes two appendixes: Modules for Training Social and Independent Living Skills and NAMI Consumer and Family Guide to Schizophrenia Treatment. Topics include general issues in treating and managing schizophrenia and treating and managing the phases of the illness. There are extremely useful chapters on the management of the first episode, treatment strategies for dual-diagnosis patients, and special populations. Each chapter ends with fairly up-to-date references and there is a useful subject index.
Assessment: This is a valuable new book summarizing the state-of-the-art in the treatment of schizophrenia. Any clinician or researcher with an interest in schizophrenia should read and refer to this book.
Daniel P. Van Kammen
Two eminent, internationally known schizophrenia researchers and experienced clinicians, have written a very practical clinician and patient focused handbook about schizophrenia and its treatment. This is clearly two masters at work here. It was a pleasure to read their expert reviews of the literature intermingled with their own experience. This book with its treatment guidelines will remain a standard for years to come.
—American Journal of Psychiatry, 4/1/03, Issue: 160, Volume: 4
From The Critics
Aimed at mental health clinicians as well as students and trainees, this text discusses the comprehensive treatment and management of schizophrenia. Herz (psychiatry, U. of Rochester School of Medicine) and Marder (psychiatry, UCLA) use the stress-vulnerability model to guide their treatment recommendations. Topics include, for example, difficulties in diagnosis, early intervention prevention programs, pharmacological treatment, social skills training, and dual-diagnosis patients. Annotation c.
