Overview

Providing essential, state-of-the-art information in easily digestible segments for clinicians and students, this unique text includes the following key features:

  • brief, realistic case vignettes adapted from real clinical experience, which increase understanding of the clinical or theoretical point being made
  • questions interspersed throughout the book to promote information retention.

Using a 'phase-of-illness' approach to schizophrenia and its management, this important text provides the best context in which to discuss and integrate various technical and theoretical aspects, and also describes treatment customized to the phase in which the patient is presented. The only one of its kind - no other currently available book takes this approach.

Detailed, informative and user-friendly, Schizophrenia is essential reading for all primary care physicians, psychiatry trainees, and early career mental health workers.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is an easy to read, concise, and up-to-date new book on the practical and everyday issues in the care of patients suffering from schizophrenia. Written and edited by clinician-researchers in the area of schizophrenia, this book is an excellent contribution to the care of patients suffering from this devastating disorder and their families.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the authors, is to "...convey information about schizophrenia to those who are either required to work with patients having this disorder or are interested in doing so." The authors wanted to produce a book with the characteristics of brevity, readability, immediate utility, essential material, fun, and case-driven. The authors have succeeded on all counts.
Audience: The intended audience includes "physicians, medical students, nurses, social workers, and other students."
Features: The book features 21 short chapters and includes four appendixes and an index. All the important aspects of the everyday care of the patient with schizophrenia are covered, such as assessment, talking to patients, prognosis, phase-specific treatment, symptom management, compliance, violence and suicidality, the history of the illness, risk factors, essential neurobiology, and future prospects. The appendixes include a glossary, list of medications, a bibliography, and a list of helpful resources. Lastly, there is a useful index.
Assessment: This is an extremely user friendly new book on the practical aspects of the care of patients with schizophrenia. I highly recommend it.
