New drug and non-drug treatments are becoming available, allowing the first real advances in treatment in 30 years. Robert W Buchanan is Chief of the Outpatient Research Program at Maryland Psychiatric Research Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland.

Description: This is an excellent and concise second edition of a book covering the essential aspects of schizophrenia. Written and edited by internationally recognized experts in the field, this book is a valuable contribution to psychiatry.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive yet concise, critical, and clinically useful overview of the current knowledge about schizophrenia. The editors have succeeded in producing a very useful "fact book" for the busy clinician.
Audience: The intended audience is psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, students, and trainees.
Features: The book features 91 pages divided into 11 chapters. Topics covered include history of the illness, symptoms and diagnosis, epidemiology, genetics, current biological theories, brain imaging, neurochemistry, psychopharmacologic strategies, psychosocial interventions and early intervention. There is also a section on useful addresses for support and research organizations and a helpful index section.
Assessment: This is a valuable second edition of this concise book summarizing the state of the art in schizophrenia. Any clinician who needs to keep up to date in schizophrenia should read and refer to this book.
