Schizophrenic

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
If his precocious boy band mate Justin Timberlake is the next-generation Michael Jackson, 'N Sync's equally talented second banana, JC Chasez, may be generation Y's answer to Prince. In a move that would make the Purple One proud, the formerly modest crooner takes a surprisingly sex-obsessed stance on several funk-, dance-, and pop-driven tracks on his aptly named solo debut, Schizophrenic, including the thumping "Some Girls Dance with Women" and the new wave–inspired "All Day Long I Dream About Sex." Further shedding his wholesome image, the 27-year-old waves his freak flag even higher on the cheeky club thumper "100 Ways" and the throbbing, Basement Jaxx–assisted ...

Further shedding his wholesome image, the 27-year-old waves his freak flag even higher on the cheeky club thumper "100 Ways" and the throbbing, Basement Jaxx–assisted "Shake It," which samples B.T. Express's disco hit "Do It 'Til You're Satisfied." But just as the disc's title suggests, Schizophrenic is all over the musical map -- which, as it turns out, is a good thing. Although Chasez, who co-wrote the album's 15 songs, didn't enlist Timberlake's producers, the Neptunes and Timbaland, to mine his beats, the record's strength lies in the singer's ability to effortlessly flow from style to style: "She Got Me" is Stevie Wonder filtered through Jamiroquai; the acoustic guitar–laced "Something Special" recalls George Michael's "Faith"; "Everything You Want" dabbles in reggae; and the R&B-lite ballads "Lose Myself" and "Dear Goodbye" are the album's only recognizable hints of 'N Sync. With the unpredictably good Schizophrenic, Chasez puts the final nail in 'N Sync's coffin sorry, Lance, Chris, and Joey and emerges as a bona fide solo star and Grammy contender in his own right.
Rolling Stone - James Hunter
1/2 Schizophrenic is all stylistic pastiche and adventure, territory that boomed during the Eighties (think Prince) but later became more the province of hip-hop and dance. This is music that first got Chasez -- as well as the Neptunes -- shaking.
Entertainment Weekly - Tom Sinclair
With his bandmate Justin Timberlake being hailed as the Michael Jackson of the new millennium, Chasez seems to be positioning himself as this era's answer to Prince, the '80s' most erotically minded pop genius and Jacko's erstwhile rival.
Blender - Robert Christgau
The musical highlight is a Basement Jaxx track hooked by what sounds like an electric tympani.

A Breath of Fresh air for Music....

JC's album is definately what we need in the music world. It combines all the elements of music that we forgot we really loved. It is such a great thing to finally be able to listen to a CD from beginning to end without hearing the same exact melody or beat everytime!! I absolutly adore this CD!!

    A MUCH NEEDED NEW SOUND

I love this CD! I took my chances buying, but it has certainly not been disappointing! The songs are catchy and his voice is amazing. There aren't even any lame "N'Sync" type ballads on here. It's all upbeat, great stuff. You will love it!

    A must listen!!

JC's solo cd rocks! I love that the songs are different and upbeat and strong. His range is awesome, never leaving the listener disappointed. The ballads talk about love and uncertainty and breaking up, but his voice and his words capture the soul. There aren't many artists that can do that, at least not for me. Schizophrenic is an awesome album.

I think his cd is quite good.

JC has developed to an excellent and creative songwriter. He's tried different styles and sounds like a few other artists (Kelly Clarkson, Pink, etc) have tried recently. The difference here is that it works. JC has a wonderful and strong voice that effortlessly moves from r&b to new wave passing through funk and pop with a little bit of latin jazz. There are some misses out of the 15 original songs, but mostly hits. I give it a B+.

    Schizophrenic over this CD

I am a HUGE *N Sync fan...and an even HUGER JC Chasez fan. When I first heard some snippets of this album...I was hooked. It's amazing what vocal talent this man has. I know his CD will never surpass Justin Timberlake's...but...JC has proven himself to be the brillant artist that Justin cannot be.

    More than I Expected!

Wow! I only bought this CD because I'm a fan of NSYNC but this CD is completely different. I love it. It's completely original from anything I've ever heard. 'Shake it' and 'one night stand' are absolutely great. I'd buy this CD if you like to dance!

    Surprisingly fantastic.

I took a gamble buying this album without listening to it first, and for once the gamble paid off. The album is well designed, even though the songs are very eclectic. Many critics have said the "music is all over the place," but that's better than the alternative where all the songs on the cd sound the same (Madonna's American Life, anyone?)Yes, JC is very reminiscent of Prince both in vocals and theme, but this music is fresh and vibrant. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
