Overview

Schlieren and shadowgraph techniques are basic and valuable tools in various scientific and engineering disciplines. They allow us to see the invisible: the optical inhomogeneities in transparent media like air, water, and glass that otherwise cause only ghostly distortions of our normal vision.

These techniques are discussed briefly in many books and papers, but there is no up-to-date complete treatment of the subject before now. The book is intended as a practical guide for those who want to use these methods, as well as a resource for a broad range of disciplines where scientific visualization is important. The colorful 400-year history of these methods is covered in an extensive introductory chapter accessible to all readers.

    Refractive Visualization

Schlieren and Shadowgraph techniques have been used for over a centry to help understand complex fluid flows. While numerous research articles and short monographs, and chapters in textbooks have have been written on the subject, no comprehensive book has ben available until now. In addition to many previously described schlieren techniques, this book includes more recent work, including several contributions from the author. This seminal book has a complete historical development section, extensive technical and practical descriptions, and numerous high quality flow pictures. The level of detail should be of particular value to anyone desiring to use these techniques from scratch. This book is a must-have for workers in fluid flow labs.

    The substance of shadows

These two techniques for showing up refractive-index changes in solids, liquids and gases are very widely used, especially in fluid dynamics. Many research papers and textbooks mention the technique but until Gary Settles' book appeared there was no standard account. This book is it. It starts with a historical chapter to show how old some of the basic ideas are, and then discusses the details on fundamental and practical levels. Highly recommended.
